I love going to Sam’s Club and I love even more when I get to go by myself. The closest one to us is in Abilene and when Vince and I go to Abilene, there are so many stops to make and because we buy cold stuff, it’s always the last stop we make and by that time, I’m exhausted . . tired of following Vince around every store.
Today I had to go to Abilene for a doctor’s appointment and the only place I went besides grabbing some lunch was . . Sam’s Club!
I think my dislike for shopping is because Vince knows no limit when he gets in a store. I’m not blaming him . . it’s just the way he is. I’m more of a “get what you need and get out” kind of shopper. I don’t enjoy going up and down every aisle in the store, picking up everything and looking at all sides, reading the fine print, putting it back; then going a few rows over and coming back to that item you just thoroughly examined. That drives me nuts!
Sams has “Scan & Go” app where you can scan the things you’re buying as you put them in the cart. Then when you’re done (or, accidentally when you’re not done!), you hit “Pay” and out you go. No taking everything out of the cart and putting it on the conveyor belt at the checkout; no dealing with the checkout folks . . so much easier. And, you can see the running total of how much you’re spending as you put each item in the cart.
I went specifically for meat and I put a cooler in the car this morning. I did get lamb chops, chuck roasts, some chicken, cranberry, pecan salad that had looked good last time we were in Sam’s. I love (as in I want them every day!) the California Turkey Reuben at McAlister’s so I bought a package of turkey, some Swiss cheese, a bag of shredded cabbage to make coleslaw and I’m going to try making those turkey reubens at home. I bought Addie some pajamas.
For dinner tonight, I had lettuce, tomatoes, the chicken salad from Sam’s and those crackers which are very yummy. They’re Crunchmaster 5 Seed Multigrain Crackers and they are really good!
Another thing I bought was this set of two large Rubbermaid Freshworks containers.
They say they will keep produce fresh 80% longer. We’ll see! I paid $14.98 for a pack of two. The same pack at Amazon is $31.58. If I like them, I’m going to be wishing I’d bought more at Sam’s.
With salads, I still make them ahead and vacuum seal them in jars but sometimes, we just want lettuce for sandwiches or we want a different salad and when I buy the big tubs of lettuce, it always gets slimy before I use it all so we’ll see how this works.
I washed up a whole container of lettuce and packed both containers and am anxious to see how it works. They have smaller sizes which would be great for strawberries (which is what they say they tested and got the 80% results) because strawberries never last long.
The whole problem is that I don’t go to the store very often and I’m expecting things to last longer than they probably do these days. Hopefully these containers will help!

Let us know how the container work. Waste way too much produce.

I LOVE those crackers!!! Had them the other day at a friend’s (along with the squeeze cheese which I hadn’t had in YEARS) so had to go get both. Have been eating several a day..just hope it doesn’t cause my diverticulitis to kick in! UGH All those seeds!

I love the scan-n-go app also! No more waiting in long lines. Unless…… if you get alcohol you can’t use it.
I got a couple of the containers at Target a while back, didn’t seem to work very well for me. User error maybe? Interested to see how you like them.

Shopping alone is the ONLY way to shop if you HAVE to shop at all! Luckily my husband is not a shopper and would just as soon go alone too. We both like to get what we need and get out!

I heard on the radio that salad leaves keep for ages without going slimy just by popping a paper towel in with them – this draws away the moisture. Works for me.

I still use my Tupperware lettuce bowl and never have trouble with slime. But, then, my husband goes through a head every 4 days.

Love those crackers

Anxiously waiting for your critique of the containers, I’m the only one who eats lettuce so it would be nice to eat it all and not have to throw half of it out.

I’ve seen those containers and have been so curious–it would be great if they worked! The life of store-bought produce in the summer is so short. Please let us know! Thank you in advance for your research, Dr. Judy.

The secret to long life in lettuce is not to let it rest on anything moist, I wrap it in paper towels and put it in a grocery bag. Change the towels when they feel damp, I can get 2 or 3 weeks out of romaine.

Thanks! I’ll try that.
