Yesterday Nicole and I were in Walmart and I was buying toppings for our pizza last night. I couldn’t find the Canadian Bacon that I normally get so I asked a lady stocking the meat counter. She was very nice and very helpful and explained to me that they’re being serviced by a different warehouse now and no longer carry the Canadian Bacon I used to get but they have a different kind . . in a different location. She went on to tell me that they were no longer carrying some items but had added some new items . . like frozen alligator!
I made a sauce piquante, almost like the recipe on the back of the bag. It called for 2 pounds of gator meat but I used on pound. We were having pizza and I wanted to cook the gator just as a side dish. I knew Chad and Nicole would eat it but I wasn’t sure Vince would eat it. Nicole knew what it was because she was with me when we bought it and she told Chad. I wasn’t purposely misleading Vince. If he had asked me what it was, I would have told him but I knew if I volunteered that it was gator, he wasn’t going to even try it.
It was served, Vince declared that it was delicious. I think it was Chad that said “You know it’s alligator, right?” NO! He truly thought it was chicken. He said “Judy! Is this really gator?” I told him yes and showed him the picture of the package. I’m not sure he ever believed me.
There was a bit leftover and I asked him if he wanted me to save it. Oh, yes! He said he would eat it later . . he liked it!

I’ve tried it and didn’t like it. There was a place down by the mall that had a lot of Cajun food and my son loved me. Me..not so much.

I’ve had it that I didn’t like also. It can sometimes be very fishy/gamey tasting and it can be tough. I trim it up and got every smidgen of skin or “gristle” out of it, then soak it in wine for at least an hour. You would really think it’s chicken if you ate it.

Please tell me how you cooked it. Just general directions. There is a store near me that sells all sorts of exotic meats and I’ve had their gator. It almost looks like a tomato sauce in the photo. Looking for new ways to cook it. Thank you.

I’ve had grilled gator at a restaurant in New Orleans a couple of times and I love it! When people ask, I say the texture is like chicken, but it has (at least to me) more of a fish flavor. That particular restaurant (and I don’t remember the name) also has fried gator on the menu, but I’ve always opted for grilled. Yum!
