The garden is almost completely done. It would have produced longer if we had rain. It’s so terribly dry here and I’m afraid to keep the garden watered and the fruit trees watered because I don’t want to stress our well. We’ve not had any significant rainfall since the hail storm we had the second or third week in May. The next chance of rain in our forecast is a small chance (30%) on August 2. That’s how it is here . . that’s why it’s so hard to have a garden and the best thing I can do is work as hard as I can to get the garden planted early, pick what I can before the end of June and be done.
The okra has just started producing a good bit and it will produce til frost so I’m trying to keep it alive. The artichokes are perennials so I’ll continue to water them. The orange Boston Marrow squash is one I picked a few weeks ago. The other melon is a crane melon and they’re pretty much finished producing. So . . not much left in the garden but a lot of weeds that have taken over.
The zucchini came from the key hole. I had also planted some of the asparagus beans (yard long green beans) and I’ve picked enough for several meals. Considering how late we got it planted, it’s done pretty good.
It was a good garden for this area. I miss being able to have a garden that will last through the summer.

Did you get much canned?

Just picked the first batch of green beans this morning. First patch of sweet corn should be ready soon. Carrots are doing good and beets are ready to be pickled. There should be lots of tomatoes and cantaloupe if they don’t get hailed out. Broccoli has been a bust. Dry here too, not much for rain since the end of May….though it rains all around us. You’ve worked hard in your garden. You deserve a rest.

It’s so different here in the Pacific Northwest! It’s rain and cooler temps that hold us back. If we have too much rain, spring plantings are ruined. There are some things we don’t plant until late May or June. Since we don’t get a lot of hot weather, things take longer to produce and some seasons don’t make it. But I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

We had our first measurable rain in weeks last eve/night in a storm that, for the most part, dealt its fury NE and South of us. Some little pockets got 7″+, us-barely 1.5″…..but it’s something! Tomorrow another severe weather event headed our way. Crops were flattened with the 60mph+ winds so we’ll see if they right themselves to be harvested later. Weather trends are not for the faint of heart, for sure!!

I’m wondering if there’s a way to save some of the gray water from laundry or kitchen sink and water with it? If you use the appropriate soaps, it should be okay. I was thinking about this for Nevada, if we moved there.

Between the birds, the bugs, little rain, and new soil in my box garden, my first garden was underwhelming. My tomatoes are working hard, considering all of the above, but the birds keep munching holes in them. Rain all around us also. It’s like we have a glass dome over us!

So how about a progress report on the Keyhole garden.
