Very late last night, just moments from being “this morning”, my first socks for Tour-de-Sock 2017 were finished.
The pattern is Fins and this is a pattern I can hardly wait to make again. If you’re a sock knitter, you really have to try this pattern.
I don’t want to say too much and give away the uniqueness but I will say . . I’ll bet it is like no pattern you have ever made before! I actually loved the crazy heel construction. The designer says at one point “you may be scratching your head, wondering if if I’ve lost my mind . . ” Yes, that’s exactly what I was wondering. You know I am not a quitter but my first thought was this is NOT going to work. I’m stopping now! But it did work and it worked so well.
I loved that the pattern design is so . . not only unique, but obvious and interesting. With the pattern, it’s very easy to see if you’ve made a mistake within a few stitches so it’s a great project for working on when not able to give it your full attention (while visiting or at knitting group).
When I first saw the design, I thought the fins at the top were too quirky for me and my plan was to put a lifeline in before the fins, then remove them after the photo was taken but I love them and am keeping them.
The only modification I made was to knit 6 rows of ribbing before the fins. The minimum number of rows had to be 4 rows.
With last year’s Tour-de-Sock patterns, there was one pattern that I loved and have made a couple more times. I believe this pattern is going to be my favorite for this year but . . it’s the first one and there are five more to come.

What size needles did you use? The pattern says fingering weight, but it does not state size of needles.
JudyL says
I used a 2.25 mm.

Thank you

I would LOVE to see a picture of them on your tootsies. Hard to imagine from just the pix of the socks.

I can’t imagine how that texture would work when wearing shoes… it looks very bulky. Does it “squish” down?
JudyL says
Sock yarn is so soft that unless there are beads or something, I can’t feel anything where there’s texture used with fingering weight wool. My right foot is very sensitive due to edema on the right foot from an injury and the texture doesn’t bother that foot at all so I can’t imagine how sensitive someone would have to be for it to bother them.
