This morning I was prepared to start pulling out all the beans and when I got out there, they’re all full of blooms.
Not sure how they’ll do in this heat but I’m leaving them in the ground and we’ll see what happens.
My snake boots didn’t fit . . couldn’t get them on because of my right foot that’s injured . . couldn’t wiggle it down in there, even with the zipper so I sent them back and ordered gaiters to wear with my shorter hiking boots. With the gaiters, I was able to go farther into the garden and picked almost a 5 gallon bucket of tomatoes.
Vince went through and picked all the remaining Boston Marrow squash.
Those squash did so well. I didn’t plant but about 8 seeds and we’ve used at least half a dozen of them already – some we’ve eaten, some I’ve canned.
I cooked some of it down, added sugar and spices and made it similar to pumpkin or apple butter. We had some for breakfast this morning and Vince said he likes it better than apple butter. It’s very nice to find a substitute for things that don’t grow well here.
The keyhole is doing well, considering I haven’t been very diligent about watering or fertilizing. I’m done fertilizing everything else in the garden and what’s left in the garden is on irrigation so I totally forget to go out and water the keyhole. I’m going to fertilize it in the morning but I’ve been getting yellow squash, zucchini and peppers from it.
On this side, those are cantaloupe hanging over. Hoping no critters figure out how to get into the garden and eat any cantaloupes that might grow.
Not only are the bugs eating everything, they’re using my garden as a breeding ground and incubation area. I don’t remember ever seeing so many eggs on things on things in the garden. Oh well . . I guess in this part of the country, where there are so many bugs, there have to be lots of bug eggs . . just wish they were not on my veggies! I just scrape them into a bowl and microwave them or pour boiling water over them or . . feed them to the chickens! I guess it’s all part of gardening.

Love this garden update! I’m worried my first garden isn’t going to be a success, but I’m still fighting for it. BER is a big problem. The scientist garden expert I consult believes the plants aren’t getting enough calcium because of fluoride in my city water binding to calcium… All Greek to me! Fortunately I don’t depend on the garden, so I’m hoping for the best and still going to care for it as best as I can.
