Around here, I’ve learned that no matter how good our chances are for rain, no matter how cloudy or thundery it may be, it ain’t raining til it’s raining! If the weather report says 99% chance of rain, I figure that’s a pretty decent “maybe’. Otherwise, it isn’t happening. Another thing . . I rarely even check the forecast. If it rains, it rains. It doesn’t make a whole lot of difference in my daily activities.
Yesterday, our high got up to about 114° and it was miserable. I worked in the garden til about 9 and had to leave to go get a haircut but there was no going back out there and working in that heat. The chickens still had to be tended, I watered some of the fruit trees last night and got the smoker cleaned out and ready to go but the minute I walked out, it almost took my breath away and within about 90 seconds, I was sweating and wanting to be back in the a/c.
I had looked at the weather and knew our high today was supposed to be 80° so I was looking forward to cooler temps since I needed to be working in the garden. The tomatoes need to be tied up again but .. my tall snake boots won’t be here til probably Tuesday so I wasn’t really anxious to go into the thick of the weeds without snake boots. I do wear my shorter insulated boots and carry a stick to make lots of noise but I’d feel a whole lot better with tall snake boots.
We woke up a little before 6 this morning. Thanks, Rita . . it was thundering. My first thought was “Yay! I have an excuse to not work in the garden!” But . . thunder doesn’t necessarily mean rain so I tamped back my excitement but by 7:15, it was pouring. It didn’t rain long but there may be more coming.
After an all day trip to San Angelo and having those two root canals done on Thursday, I was a zombie yesterday. I took a long nap and was still tired all day. I’m getting old! What I need today is a day to sit and knit and not have to do any outside chores. Not sure if I’ll get that but at least we’re getting a little rain and a little cooler temps. I’m thankful for both!

It is substantially cooler here today (but we didn’t get up to 114 either) and raining good. My friend with a rain gauge says we’ve already gotten 2″! WOOHOO! Hope you get lots of rain down your way, too.

Meanwhile here in the high desert of Southern California it was still over 116 today with no rain. Supposed to be that on the Lord’s day tomorrow and then drop a few degrees next week. I only ventured out about 5pm to get the mail. Too hot to even think of doing anything. It is so early this year for these temps.

That “rain thing” is what I have learned about Texas, too. My 3 winters in Harlingen most definitely has revamped my Midwest weather thinking. “It’s not due to rain til it’s raining” is something I have to keep telling myself during my “Winter Texan” days!! Hope those tall boots come early!!
