It is as hot as I can remember it ever being. I walked out to the thermometer and was surprised . . not sure I’ve ever seen it this hot here, for sure not in June.
At the rate this summer is shaping up, my thermometer may not go high enough to register our July and August temperatures!
I cane back inside, thankful there was nothing I needed to be doing outside, and then I thought . . the chickens are probably miserable so I went figured I should go out and dump the 112° water out of their little wading pool and add fresh, cool water.
But, on the way out to the chickens, I noticed birds in the fig tree which means . . ripe figs. Oh, how I love figs! The fig tree grows all the way to the ground, which means in order to reach them, I have to stick my feet places I cannot see . . which means . . snakes! I actually had on flip flops because I was only supposed to be going to fill the chicken pool but I did manage to get a few figs.
One bite and the memories come flooding my mind . . being a little girl, 6 or 7 years old, and staying under my grandma’s old fig tree and eating figs straight off the tree til someone realized where I was and made me stop eating them for fear I’d be sick.
Then I remembered that I have probably 20 gallons of frozen figs from last year so I thought the chickens might appreciate those so I took some of them out — a frozen fig popsicle of sorts.
Between fresh water in the pool and frozen figs, I hope that helps them cool off a bit. Tomorrow is supposed to be much cooler . . Accuweather is saying our high is going to be 78. If that’s true, I’ll be happy and will spend most of my day in the garden.

Oh how jealous I am! I love figs…straight off the tree. I could eat a gallon. When we moved into this house 17 years ago there was a huge fig tree in the backyard. I’m the only one who likes figs so guess what? My husband cut it down because it made such a mess and it was in his way. No one sells figs around here so I’m out of luck! It’s a shame that we don’t have real farmer’s markets anymore.

I hope you are cooler now. Those figs look delicious. I have only recently begun to enjoy them.
