No pictures tonight.
When I went to the chiropractor today, we were talking about gardening and he asked me if I’m seeing a lot of snakes. YES! Then he told me about his wife almost getting bit by a rattlesnake and as soon as he killed that one, he realized there was a second one right there too. Ugh . . snakes, snakes, snakes!
Seriously, everywhere I got, everyone is talking about how many snakes we’re seeing in this area. Even when I’m not thinking about snakes, someone brings up snakes!
This evening I was going out to pick beans. Vince said “You ARE wearing your boots, right?” Yes . . I don’t go out without boots, even though it’s just rubber boots . . still better than flip flops. I told him that no matter where I go, people are talking about snakes and I’m starting to get paranoid but it was about 7 p.m., and I hadn’t seen a snake today so maybe today was my lucky day.
I started out to the garden and about halfway before I got there, I saw a bucket on the side of the path and went to pick it up to use for the beans and what was sitting right beside it . . a snake! I turned right around, went back to the house . . Vince looked at me and said “You saw a snake!” Yep. I sat down and then I thought . . nope . . I’m not letting them get the best of me. I went back out, picked beans, ever aware of any movement . . any sound . . knowing there were probably several snakes watching me at any given time.
Summer can end now. Snakes can go back to where ever they came from. I’ve had enough of them already! It is going to be a LONG summer if things don’t change.

I think I like our wildlife a bit better. We have little rabbits everywhere.

I’d gladly give up the snakes for more rabbits. We have quite a few cottontails and they dart out in front of me when I’m not expecting them and cause me jump every now and then. We even see jackrabbits every now and then.

We’re seeing them in the Denver area! Small garters in my backyard, rattlers a few miles away! Eeek!!
JudyL says
I can take the garters but not the rattlesnakes. They seem to be plentiful and more aggressive than usual.

Sorry to be “that one,” but summer has not officially started yet.

Maybe not on the calendar but for here, it’s summertime. Temps are over 100 already with heat indexes around 105 both tomorrow and Sunday. Most of the beans in my garden are done producing and I’ve started pulling them out. The “summer” garden is fading fast. Officially, the date has not arrived but that’s the only thing not saying “SUMMER IS HERE” so, for me . . summer is here.

And the rest of the English-speaking world, at least, seems to agree that June 1 starts summer, instead of solstices and equinoxes. But you know, Texas is its own world anyway. =)

It’s absolutely amazing that there are so many! I wonder if anyone is studying this phenomenon. Sounds like a scientist’s dream.

It could be a good thing, maybe they will help put a dent in the grasshopper invasion. I’m pretty sure they eat bugs. Cat might pick up on some hints for killing them

Supposedly, there is increased snake activity in the South this year due to the short mild winter we experienced. Reported snake bites have increased dramatically in several states. I usually see many garden snakes in my yard and swimming pool but strangely not this summer. Maybe they have left Alabama and headed to Texas!

They (The National Weather Service) put a heat watch all this week from noon Monday till 6 pm Friday here on the western slope of Colorado. When we went rock hounding in Utah a couple weeks ago- they warned us to be careful of the snakes as they are prolific this year.
My neighbor catty corner from me said she has had lots of snakes in her back yard garden of late. They can stay over there or go to the neighbor across the street and next door to them. I don’t like snakes nor do I want them in my garden.
Guess I will be watering very early or very late in the day all this week coming up. Keeping myself and my dog inside in the cooler air.

Judy, get Vince to take you to Cabela’s in Buda, Tx & get you a pair of their knee high snake boots.
They look really great (he, he) once they get broke in.And I wear them with my cut off ragged blue jean shorts, tshirt, my ugly hat & gloves on my hands, sure beats those sneaky slithering snakes biting me though !!!
Vince will love Cabela’s. My friend that lives just west of Cotulla,Tx sent me a video of 2 rattlesnakes fighting that she & her husband ran across on their ranch. Scary scary. And my oldest son has killed them at least 9 ft long down in that area of south Texas around the drilling rigs…Needless to say, he wears his snake boots & packs to make sure he get’s them before they have a chance to get him !! They have all been in excess of 6″ in diameter….

All I’ve seen are little glass snakes. Weird, usually see water moccasins. And I agree with Pam, you will love Cabelas. Also agree with you, 94 today, heat index of 102. Yeh, it’s summer.
