The baby chicks have hatched and the good mama is off the nest. The bad mama . . she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing. I wonder at what age a chicken gets senile. She’s still on a different nest every day. Today she isn’t even sitting on wooden eggs . . she’s sitting on nothing but she seems content so not much I can do about it. I can’t stop her from sitting but I can give her wooden eggs and take all the real eggs from her . . so long as I go out there several times a day and get them.
This mama is the best mama. I had given her 7 eggs but they came from inside the house and only 2 of them hatched. That’s fine. We don’t need more chickens and she wanted to be a mama so, we’re all happy. I’m pretty sure at least one of them is her baby because of the dark legs but I haven’t really looked at the second baby’s legs.
The chicks we bought are growing so fast. Can you see which one is a rooster? We wanted 2 roosters and that’s what we got. The lady at Tractor Supply was sure she could tell girls from boys. Supposedly, when you hold the chicks in your hand, put their legs between your fingers and hold the chicks upside down, the roosters will flop around and panic and then hens will just lay there . . docile and quiet.
I think I see at least one rooster, maybe two in the Wyandottes.
It’s hard to see the Wyandottes but there are three in the picture. Only one is real colorful. The other two are a bit light. Out of 10 chicks, probably 4 of them look like they’ll be colored with the vibrant red and blue/gray.
The two Marans roosters are learning to crow I need to try to get a video. It’s so funny to hear them. I was outside this morning and I thought .. how can you not smile listening to those little dudes screeching?

Always fun to read your chicken posts. I have a brood hen sitting now. 18 days to go… Your Wyandot’s are gorgeous. Can’t wait to see the full colors.

i’m imagining little roosters learning to crow to be like boys when their voices start changing…
