Ginger lilies are probably my most favorite flower. They’re easy to grow in Louisiana but not so easy to grow where there are cold winters. There is nothing here that works positively toward growing ginger lilies.
- They are not drought tolerant.
- They don’t like full sun.
- They like acidic soil.
They will grow as far north as zone 8. We are in zone 8. I had planned to get Vince to use pallets to build a bed under the mesquite tree and I would let the tree provide some shade but .. there’s only so much Vince can get done and the flower bed under the mesquite tree didn’t happen. I have them growing in pots and . . I have a bloom forming!
I think this bloom is the consolation prize after the garden was damaged.
In Kentucky, I had ginger lilies in pots and often got several blooms each year.
They smell so good! Something I read described it as a bit gardenia and a bit honeysuckle. I can hardly wait for my little bloom to open up.

Those are beautiful. I can see why you want to grow them.

Is that what you get from planting a piece of ginger from the grocery store or is it a bulb? It is beautiful!

Not the same. The edible ginger looks very similar but doesn’t get as big as the floral variety. Both are planted from rhizones which do look pretty similar but are not the same. You can plant the ginger from the grocery store and it will grow and produce more edible ginger.

So if I got some of those I could grow them in pots, (in cincinnati) and then in the fall put them up for the winter? garage?

I have these plants here in NC and love the fragrance! One of the Drs I worked with gave to me. I didn’t know I could grow in pots!
