Our baby chicks, who are not really babies any more, have not enjoyed much outside time but that’s about to change. Usually, baby chicks are shipped within 24 hours of hatching. These chicks went to Tractor Supply where they lived in big tubs towards the back of the store, then they came home with us and even though there are windows in the coop, they haven’t really been outside.
Vince finished the screened porch. The open area is where the ramp will be. They will go down the ramp into a fenced area . . but the fence hasn’t been built yet. Vince is hoping to get it done this weekend. Eventually, they’ll have a bigger fenced area and will also be able to go into the garden.
But, yesterday was the first day they had the chance to go outside and they are so apprehensive about anything new or different. We must have stood out there 45 minutes waiting to see what they were going to do.
When Vince first opened the door, the little chicks were scared to death. This picture is mainly here because look at that little blue/red chick on the floor. We’re starting to see some pretty color!
One little chicken is getting brave!
We figured as soon as one of them went out, others would follow.
Only three ever came out (there are 22). They went back in and I closed them up for the night. I will open the door again this afternoon and they’ll probably all be out after a while. Then in a day or so, they’ll be at the door squawking at daylight . . ready to be let out. They’re growing so fast!
Notice all the green leaves still on the ground? That’s from the hail Friday night. Green leaves are everywhere!
