The turnips in the garden took forever to get started but once they got started, they are growing like a bad weed! We keep eating them and eating more and the numbers of turnips don’t seem to be going down. I have a friend here who has 7 kids and I asked him last week if he wanted some veggies so I took him some turnips, kale, lettuce, and squash. I’m betting his kids were thrilled! 🙂
When I began pulling turnips to take to them, I realized how huge some of those turnips had grown and often, they’re pithy inside when they get too big so I figured I’d better come in and cut into some and make sure they were good before giving them away.
They were perfect! I began scouring the internet to figure out what to do with all these turnips and I came across a recipe for turnip kraut using turnips instead of cabbage to make sauerkraut. Hey .. what do I have to lose . . just a few turnips!
I ended up trying two different recipes. The jar on the left will be more like pickles and the two jars on the right will be more like sauerkraut. That’s the plan anyway!

I just bought the Easy Fermenters from Amazon. I don’t have any veggies to ferment right now, but I am excited to use them. I have had such trouble with mold, no matter how much my veggies are under liquid. How do you like them?

If the mold is white it is ok. Just scrape off and toss. It’s not a bad mold and normal if the veggies are not submerged totally.

I hope you like the turnip kraut better than we did. Our favorite for turnips is to slice, parboil with salt and couple dashes of sugar, drain, then fry. Even the boys would eat them!
