The conversations we have around here . . sometimes I wonder if we’ve lost our minds . . or maybe it’s just me.
Over the weekend I was out in the garden working. I had my back to the house, the chicken coop, the shop. I thought Vince was inside. I heard him say “I’m starting to see color!” I was thinking . . I never knew he was color blind! Twenty years of being married . . you’d think I’d have noticed! Then my mind wandered and I thought about a guy from my high school and college days who was color blind. Then I thought how sad it would be not to see color but I guess if you’ve never known color, it probably wouldn’t be as bad as if one day you did, and then you didn’t. And, I think if I remember correctly, it isn’t just black and white but I guess maybe for some people it is.
Anyway, in response to Vince saying “I’m starting to see color”, I said “Good!” and kept doing what I was doing.
Later that evening, back in the house, here’s our conversation:
Me: I never realized you don’t see color!
Vince: I do see color. Why would you say something like that?
Me: Why did you say you’re starting to see color?
Vince: When did I say that?
Me: When you walked out while I was in the garden.
Vince: I said that because I was feeding the baby chicks and noticed I’m starting to see color on the little chickens!
Oh! That makes more sense. I could have gone into my usual “lack of communication” spiel because I think he doesn’t communicate and he thinks I don’t listen but hey . . isn’t that part of the Mars and Venus thing?
If I look at that little light colored one right there, I can see a bit of blueish-gray. They’re all getting so big so fast.
About half of them are sleeping on the roost and about half of them are sleeping down in the shavings. I’m betting that black one on the far end is a rooster. I see the comb developing and he’s giving me the evil eye. That’s what roosters do.
I don’t know . . when I start looking at them, they all look like roosters. Even with our bad luck with so many being roosters, I doubt they’d all be roosters. Time will tell!

Last week, while out to lunch with a friend, we stopped by the local feed store to see the chicks. They were almost irresistible, they were a bit younger than yours, fluffy and peeping. There was a sign that said there were only 10% roosters in the bunch. I was wondering how they could say that, is there a science to breeding chicks? I thought it was 50-50.
