Yesterday I checked on the baby chicks at least a dozen times. Once I went out there and when I cautiously opened the big door because if they’re right by that door, they flip out when the door opens and they could fall or jump outside and I’d never catch them. There were three of those little chicks perched up on the roost. I’ve never seen them up on a roost when they were so young. The black ones are probably a week to 10 days older than the lighter ones but still, they look so tiny on that roost.
Notice how tiny the light chick look but by next week, they’ll be looking much bigger too.
By the time I went and got my phone, only one little chick was left on the roost. I wish I could see in and see what they’re doing without opening the door. Once I open the door, they all scatter.
On a similar topic . . yesterday I heard all the big chickens making noise. I listen for them to make sure they’re not sounding like they’re in danger but the noise they were making yesterday was weird . . different. Not “We’re fixing to die!” or “Here are yummy bugs . . come quickly!”
I went out there and a big, fat squirrel was inside the fenced in run. The run is only partially fenced now since the chickens free range but the squirrel was in there and couldn’t find his way out. I think the chickens were being inquisitive and not trying to hurt him but they had him surrounded and he was in a panic. There’s landscape fencing over the top of the run so he’d run up the fence and run along the top fencing but he still couldn’t get out. Everywhere he went, a dozen or more chickens were right at his tail. I had to go into the run and shoo the chickens away so the squirrel could find his way out. Once he found the opening, he was out of there as fast as he could go. I didn’t have a camera with me for that incident but wish I would have.

There’s only one solution you know: a chicken cam. You could watch the chickens from your sewing room! You could also broadcast it on your website–a 24 hour chicken channel. I would love a live chicken cam! Episode One could have been: The Squirrel Adventure. See? Fascinating!

I would second Lisa’s idea. That would be really cool for us nite owls to tune in and see if there is anything going on at 1 am in the morning. lol
I would have loved seeing that squirrel run for his life. I’d be applauding those chicken fast on his tail. 🙂
