The little chicks spent three nights in their tub but they’re growing so quickly and the high today is going to be 95° so inside the shop, it will be well over 100°. It was time to get them out of the shop.
You know how I am . . give me a space and I’m going to fill it up. It’s been probably a year since we had chickens in this coop. I had been sticking my gardening supplies in there. The coop had to be scrubbed and sanitized before adding the new chicks but first, I had to get all my stuff out of there.
Some may remember this little plastic garden shed we got on sale for almost nothing several years ago. It’s right there y the coop . . why didn’t I just put the stuff in the shed? Because it was easier to open the coop door and toss it in there!
All my supplies were moved out of the coop and into the shed. Vince then cleaned out the coop and scrubbed the places that needed scrubbing, sprayed it down and I got in and cleaned the windows.
I couldn’t clean the outside of the windows because the hardware cloth is on there and I wasn’t about to ask Vince to take it off so I could clean the windows!
Once the coop was clean, Vince covered the laying boxes to keep the baby chicks out of there. They love getting in there and they get in the habit of sleeping in there and it’s a very hard habit to break. We want chickens to get in the laying boxes, lay eggs and get out. It will be a while before the baby chicks are ready to lay eggs so for now, the laying boxes are blocked.
The shavings are in. The heat lamp is hung. Now all we need are baby chicks . . which we have . . 22 of them!
There they are . . in their new home. Scared to death but by tomorrow, they’ll be loving having all the space and being able to fly around and run. They’ll be confined to the coop for at least a couple of months. I honestly can’t remember when we start letting them out but it will be after they’re big enough that they can’t slip through the chicken wire.
They’re cute little rascals, aren’t they?
