You know I would never try to convince anyone to order fabric! There’s so much to know about knit fabric — jersey, ponte, double brushed, cotton lycra,, poly lycra, yoga knit . . I really don’t have a clue! Right now I’m just ordering and thinking I can use it all for something!
These are the places I’ve either come across on my own or someone has talked about on one of the Facebook groups.
This list is not all inclusive but it’s the ones I’ve discovered, and this list is in no particular order as to anything.
I’ve heard this company is owned by Amazon. I have no idea. I ordered from them and they were quick to ship. I liked that the fabric was all individually wrapped and in separate bags with a label on each bag as to the type fabric and yardage. Also, at some amount of purchase, you get free shipping and I don’t think the amount was outrageously high.
They have an amazing amount of knit – lots of weight, lots of designs. They have $7.99 shipping, regardless of order size. That’s not a bad price. Knit can be heavy. My first order from them has not arrived yet (nor has my second order but . . who’s counting?). I really like their selection. I like that they sometimes have coordinating fabrics. I like that they have a pretty good description about their fabrics.
I’m a little confused about this one and I’ll be able to tell you more once my fabric arrives. I ordered several packages of “ends”. One is 4 yards of double brushed knit (4 different fabrics I think) for $20. Another is 6 yards (all separate one yard pieces I think) of “fashion knit” fabric for $25. One yard is a pretty big amount with 56 – 60″ wide fabric, and a lot of the patterns call for separate fabrics for the sleeves, or the bodice has princess type inserts. Since I have no stash, I’m kinda stash building so I’m thinking these 1 yard pieces might be good. Again . . I have not received my order from this place yet. Also, they have free shipping on orders over $75.
The people on FB go crazy for this store. Of course, I am on their FB page so that’s to be expected. I got one box of yarn from them and there’s more coming. They have a great selection but you kinda have to know more than I know because there are no descriptions. Their prices seem good but they have no break on shipping and shipping for an average size box of knit is over $10. I understand . . it’s a cost of ordering online and I’m not complaining. One thing that really impressed me about Knit Pop – they had some fabric in. They washed it and dried it and some of the “gold” didn’t hold up so they pulled it and sent it back. They seem to care about quality and price/shipping costs don’t matter a whole lot if I’m not getting quality. They’re very quick with shipping too.
Knit Pop has some kind of auction too and I haven’t quite figured that out. I think I’ve spent enough for a while so I’m going to stay off the fabric sites . . at least til tomorrow.
One last thing .. the tunic I made this evening . . that fabric came from Amazon. I order it over the weekend when I had no idea where else to shop and I was desperate for some fabric. It said seller was “Fabric.com”. I ordered 3 yards. It came to about $21 and with Prime, I paid no shipping. So, don’t forget about Amazon. When I search for “knit fabric”, a bunch of fabric comes up but I’m not seeing a lot of Prime. Prices seem to run from about $6.95 per yard to upwards of $15/yard, which seems pretty standard.
Just for the record, I’ll try to see if I can identify the fabrics in this picture (they’re in the sewing room . . I’m back in the house):
Front row – left to right:
Pink flame stitch (of sorts) – from local sewing store – jersey knit.
Double Brushed Poly with Spandex (Charcoal/Ivory Stripe) – Knitpop
Jersey Knit – Fabric.com
Jersey Knit – Fabric.com
Back row – left to right:
Gray Hacci Jersey – Knitpop
Double Brushed Poly with Spandex (Black with Aqua) – Knitpop
Double Brushed Poly with Spandex (Purple Haze) – Knitpop
Jersey Knit (Green/Aqua) – Amazon
Double Brushed Poly (with Spandex??) Black Paisley – Knitpop
Hope this helps. Anyone who knows more than I do (that’s probably everyone!) please feel free to chime in.

Another great value place for fabric is Marshals Dry Goods. Their enormous stock and low prices blew me away. And they ship quickly.

For knits and fabric I like the Intrepid Thread ( http://www.intrepidthread.com ) They always have modern and different knits and cottons in great colors and prints. Not the least expensive, but if you like it, well…

Love Fabric.com! Free shipping kicks in at $49, so I always try to order at least that much.

One thing I’ve found is the cheaper in quality the more apt it is to pill. The way around that is, I wash/dry before I sew, then I wash cold water only, then hang to dry. The dryer expedites the pilling. Just my observations while working with them. I love Marci Tilton and Linda Lee fabrics.
The Sewing Workshop is Linda’s line. She has gorgeous knits. Her Craftsy class helped me a lot on working with knits plus I’ve been to her workshop in Topeka.
