Yesterday when I was sewing, I looked up and I thought . . if someone walked into this room, they’d think “a lot of sewing must happen in here!”
There are two old Singer machines on the table, one old Singer on the counter top and another old Singer in a cabinet on the other side of the room. And the old Bernina 1230 stays out because that’s what I use for binding quilts and anything that needs more than a plain straight stitch.
Poor machines .. they must have thought they were abandoned but hopefully I’ll keep sewing and they’ll all see more use.
I do love the old Singer 301 models. They make a perfect straight stitch. There’s nothing Vince or I can’t fix, they never have to be taken back to a dealer for service and I bought mine when I could find them for $35 or less. That’s a whole lot of fun for $35. I’ve already given one to Nicole and she uses it when she sews. I don’t have a black 301 and I would love to come across one for not too much money but, I need to be getting rid of some of my machines . . not buying more!
I’m pretty lucky (or rather, Vince is pretty lucky) that I prefer the old machines to the new, outrageously expensive models.

If we lived closer to one another I would swap one of my black ones for one of your LBOW ones!

I sew on my mother’s old 15-91. It’s my favorite of the six machines I have. I’m slowly cleaning up the garage so that I can get to the old machine out there and clean it up one of these days!

My. Mother had a machine like the closest one in your photo. She used it so much she actually wore it out! My father bought her a new one, and it had features she loved, but I always had a hard time getting the bobbin in right. My second machine was pretty much the same model as my Mom’s old one, but the 1980’s version. I got a new Singer machine a couple of years ago, because I was making a lot of fleece jackets and my old machine just wasn’t handling the heavy fabric very well. I sold it to a friend who only planned to do “light” sewing with it. I like my current machine, but I still have some problems with getting the bobbin in correctly. Geesh! 🙂

I want a black 301 too. Someday I will run across one at the right price. Love the old machines!

Another advantage of the older machines is that they’re made to last. I had a newer machine that I neglected for a few years, and that was bad for the machine. Parts (nylon/plastic) dried out and wouldn’t work without regular use and maintenance.
Also, as always when you talk about your vintage machines: oh how I wish I had started quilting before my mother started moving around and sold the machine I grew up with. Somebody has a good machine; I hope they’re taking care of it!

Looked at that picture and thought my vision was going bad-triplets! Love the older machine-301’s and featherweights are my favorites!

It looks like you’re set up for a quilting retreat with all those sewing machines!
