It’s a new day. Last night when I went to bed and I was deleting the emails from yesterday that I didn’t need to keep and I thought to myself “One comment almost sounded like Helen was back!” Add “Google That!” in there a couple of times and the comment would have been eerily similar. Who remembers Helen? I’m thinking she was only trying to be helpful .. and she said to me what she would have said to her best friend but in my mind, it just didn’t come out that way in the comment. Linking a couple of the comments from yesterday with Helen’s comment from so many years ago made me giggle so in the end, the comment was good! We all need to giggle more. (How’s that for making lemonade from lemons?)
It’s funny to think that the comment about chickens was posted almost 8 years ago. I think Helen would be quite surprised to know that I still have chickens. I’m betting she thought I would get them and within weeks, I’d be rid of them and be over that crazy idea. I have shoveled a heck of a lot of chicken poop in 8 years and I wouldn’t change a thing and I hope I have chickens for many more years.
The other day Vince and I cleaned out the coop and Vince was taking the poop to dump in the garden in an area where we won’t be re-planting til spring. The next day I was walking through the woods to my neighbor’s house and there was a big pile of chicken poop in the area we keep cleared. I thought “That rascal! He’s filling in a hole with the poop/shavings.” Later I asked him . . did you use my chicken manure to fill a hole? He said he had not . . that he hit a bump and some of it spilled from the back of the RTV. Then we both laughed . . chicken poop is like gold around here for fertilizer and I was questioning if he was wasting the poop! Helen thought . . well, here it is in her own words:
You will have to load the straw and poop in the back of the husband’s truck and haul it somewhere – most landfills won’t accept agricultural wastes.
I think a comment often says more about the person leaving the comment, than it does about their take on the original content of the article/blog post.
In the end, I blog because it brings me pleasure to share the things I love with those who care to read about it. It’s quite nice when I can find humor in even the things that upset me for a moment.

Judy,
I didn’t see the comments questioning Boots’ human interaction, but I have to tell you it seems to me all your pets are treated like members of the family. I cringe to think what these same people would say about my little dog being left home alone 9 to 10 hours a day, and yet I think he has a great life as he receives lots of attention when we are home and he sleeps with us. I say kudos to people like you who rescue animals and give them good homes with love and medical attention.

I don’t usually comment but I read your blog every day and enjoy it immensely. Yes, you do some things differently than I do but that’s what makes life enjoyable! The diversity of life experiences and approaches makes us rich as we get to know other people. Thank you for being you! I wouldn’t want it any other way!

Oh, Helen!
My animals are strictly outdoor farm animals, including the cats and large dog. I get my share of being told to bring them inside the house in the bitter cold. We give them shelter, but ours belong outside, I’m pretty sure Boots is quite happy in your sewing room!

Helen’s comment that you will have to load the poop in the husbands truck made me laugh. I wonder if she knows that women own trucks too.

Or that gardeners cherish composted chicken poop. Helen would never believe I’m always betting my friend who has rabbits for their poop (from the rabbits).

I’d forgotten about Helen — until you mentioned chickens. Then it all came back!
