The surprises at our house continue. We moved into this house in November, 2011 so we’ve spent five summers in this house. Every summer I complain about the air conditioner. The house is small, the air conditioner is the right size. There’s a huge porch that covers the front (north) side of the house. There are no windows on the west side. The east side has two double windows but they’re pretty much shaded from the morning sun. The south side has windows in a bathroom that we don’t use much, in the kitchen and in a closet so we don’t have a lot of sun exposure.
I go from the house to the sewing room and the sewing room is nice and cool – feels comfortable. The house never feels comfortable to me. For five years I’ve moaned and complained. At least four times, we’ve had air conditioner guys out here – two different guys. They’ve checked freon, they’ve checked everything supposedly and they always make me seem like it’s me — like my hormones aren’t working. Fine . . they probably aren’t . . but they work fine when I walk into the sewing room!
Not only that but the air conditioner is so noisy! The outside unit sounds like a loud slamming of a door when it kicks on and goes off. The master bedroom is on the other side of the house and the outside unit sits just outside the two extra bedrooms. If I stay up way late and know I will wake Vince up when I go to bed, or if he’s snoring, I’ll sleep in one of the other bedrooms. I’m a sound sleeper and that a/c wakes me up every time it kicks on and then I stay awake waiting for it to go off because I know it’s going to wake me up again.
This year, I think partly because I agreed to quit squawking about wanting to move back to MO, Vince decided to replace the hvac unit – heat and air. Since the unit is all up in the attic, we waited til the worst of the heat was over.
This guy is a friend of Vince’s and everyone in town tells us he’s the best . . which also means he isn’t the least expensive but at this point, we’ll pay dearly for good air conditioning. And besides, I love his truck! I was telling Vince I want a truck like that. The look he gave me . . I think he wanted to say . . be happy you’re getting an air conditioner!
Now that the guy can get up in the attic easily, he found that the return air vent wasn’t even hooked up so instead of drawing air from inside the house, it was drawing air from the attic. That was a huge problem. It’s going to be a week or so before he gets the new unit installed so he fixed that. He also found something that was supposed to be hooked up to the “hot” side and it was hooked up backwards and he said that was screwing up the freon but it was a bigger fix so he left it alone since it’s all coming out anyway.
I will be so happy to have an air conditioner that works correctly!
Vince assumed his usual supervisory role but this time, he had to get out of his chair and climb the ladder! Good job, Vince! 🙂

Sounds like you had the same guys checking your air conditioner before that we have checking our leaking metal roof. Doesn’t it make you feel so helpless.

If you live in TX, ya gotta love a serviceman who’s truck says Evercool!”

My Mouth fell open. The return air was not hooked up and the hot attic air was to cool the house. Oh my goodness. And something else was hooked up incorrectly. That is so bad.
And hard on you. This air conditioner will pay for itself much more quickly that you originally though and you will be much more comfortable too.

We are on Swamp Coolers and when it gets hot it doesn’t work (so I rigged a red neck cooler), and I have been telling hubs we need to get the A/C -heat unit that is on solar batteries. He moans and groans about it ….So that is probably a no .. hahaha
We have a truck similar- its a 2500 Ram 4 door, long bed and we love it We can put our side by side in it and go for a ride, elk spotting or rockhounding. Its great !

All I can say is Wow. And someone was paid nicely to do an awful job. Glad you are getting it fixed!!

It’s terrible that with the number of times it’s been checked, nobody ever noticed the things hooked up wrong. I did a face plant when I read the return air was coming from the attic! Yikes!
I hope you stay there long enough to enjoy the improvement. It sounds like next summer will be much more comfortable.
