Technology has left me behind. There was a time when I wanted the newest of everything but now . . just give me something that works right, show me how to use it and let me keep it til one of us kicks the bucket. Getting a new phone, a new computer (evidenced by the fact that I still am using my overheating ancient notebook instead of the replacement Vince bought about a year ago), a car . . anything! I just want the one I’m used to and I don’t want to learn anything new.
That was until I saw the Echo Dot at Amazon. Vince is usually more enthusiastic about techie things but he kinda turned his nose up at this. He’s apprehensive that it’s going to work the way I think it will.
I really don’t know fully how it works. Vince thinks it needs a “bluetooth device” nearby (a Fire, a phone) the entire time you’re using it. I believe he thinks it has that to run . . take away the device and the Dot stops. I think it needs a device just for getting set up and then it no longer needs a device nearby but you know who’s probably right and who’s probably wrong (Me! Always!).
Here’s where it first caught my attention. The under the counter radio/ipod player in my kitchen isn’t working. I used that not only for my music but it has a clock/timer on it. It seems I’m always needing more than just the stove timer in the kitchen. Without music in the kitchen, I just don’t function well. During the day, I can use the whole house stereo but once Vince gets home, he doesn’t want to hear my music. Most of the new under the counter type music gizmos are all bluetooth and my old ipod is not bluetooth.
I have so little counter space and so few electric plugs . . don’t ask me why they put some plugs up over the kitchen cabinets and not enough down where a normal person would use them but . . my plan is to put some blue tooth speakers on top of the cabinets and plug them in up there . . not having them sitting on the counter or using one of my electric plugs. Then the Dot will be on the counter somewhere. It will be so nice to have a second timer, and I can see me asking the Dot questions all day! I’m thinking we should maybe get that 6 pack of Dots. If I had wifi in the sewing room, I’d probably do it for sure. In the sewing room, the computer is hard wired (or whatever you call it when you don’t have wifi!) I mostly listen to Pandora in there so I’ll be happy with that or Amazon Prime music in the kitchen. Just some kind of music!
For now, I ordered just one and I can’t wait for it to get here. They’re saying they’ll ship around October 20.
If it works like I’m hoping it works, I think these would make amazing Christmas gifts. I’m thinking even my dad would love one.

We have the Alexa and its the best gift we’ve ever gotten. It does it all,you can even ask where your Amazon order is. Timer, music, jokes, stocks, spelling, sports scores, anything. It just started audio books. Every week Amazon sends what you can do with your Echo or Alexa. I was thinking about getting the Echo for my sewing room. Something Vince might like is you can control things like lights, TV, thermostats with Alexa app. I’ll be waiting to see how you like your Echo Dorris

I don’t see us buying the thermostat controller. We have a programmed thermostat. He has the remote for the TV and some of our lights but I would like to have it for the lamps in the bedroom. I guess I’m lazy but I walk in there, turn on the light switch, walk to the bedside lamps, turn them on, then go back and turn off the light switch. Yes . . that sounds even lazier when I write it than when I think it! 🙂

Doesn’t it need an Echo to play off of or did I miss the fact that you already have an Echo.
JudyL says
It does not need Echo. This is from How to Geek
The Echo Dot is a totally independent product in the Echo product line. You do not need any other Echo or Amazon product (like the Amazon Fire TV) to use the Echo Dot.

Do you Alexa? When I read about the Dot, it sounded like you need to Alexa. Am I wrong?

I have Alexa and ordered Dot to use in other parts of our house. They do not need each other to work. As I read about Dot, I understand you can use blue tooth enabled speakers or ones that you plug into the “headphone” type jack on Dot. I really like using Alexa and enjoy listening to Pandora and I heart radio as well as setting timers, alarms and reminders.
