First, most any questions you have can be found on the Knit Companion website. There’s a tour, tutorials, user guide and FAQ.
As far as the “in app” purchase, that’s pretty common. Usually, you get a taste of what an app can do, then you can decide if you want to pay for it or not. With KC, you hit “subscribe” and then you will see the cost, which is apparently different in different parts of the world and that’s why you have to hit subscribe in order to know the cost, which I think the regular cost is $6.99/year.
If you’ve installed the app, decide it isn’t for you and you don’t want it, it can be easily removed.
Also, the IOS version has add ons which are purchased separately and the Android version will have the same later.
The second most important thing (in my opinion) to know is that since you have to go through Google Play to get KC for Android, and since Kindle Fires apparently run on an Android-like OS, and more importantly Kindle Fires do not use Google Play, you cannot get KC on a Fire but . . I’ve read, and I’m not sure how it works or how well it works, that there’s a workaround if you have other Android devices. You’ll have to figure that one out if you’re interested.
Third, and I’m not sure why folks are squawking about this (not on here but I’ve seen it other places), you have to use Paypal or a credit card (can be a Visa gift card) to pay on Google Play. I searched and didn’t see any security issues specific to Google Play. Honestly, I feel better about using PayPal for Google Play than I do using my credit card at a gas pump these days.
I wish all knitters could sit beside me and watch to see how much you can do with Knit Companion. It’s so amazing.
I can’t remember if I told you this story but please forgive me if I’m repeating myself here. When Nicole and I were in a yarn shop near Joplin, we loved one of the sample cowls that was on display and we bought yarn to make it. The shop owner said “That’s my own pattern and it’s on Ravelry for $5 but since you bought the yarn, I’ll give you the pattern.” She handed us paper patterns but instead of knitting without the benefit of KC, I paid $5 and bought the pattern on Ravelry so I could use KC. I’m so used to having it – the convenience of tracking, the row row counters, repeat counters, etc. that it would take a very special pattern for me to consider knitting without KC.
Again . . I’m also not affiliated, don’t get a dime from them but totally love the program .

Knit Companion is worth every single penny! I used a paper pattern to knit something after I’d been using KC and NEVER again! Sticky notes marking my place came loose, it was miserable.

I love KC! I usually have many projects going at once, and I never have to worry about forgetting where I am.

I’m trying to get it on my Samsung tablet. So far I have not been able to find it.

I have a Samsung tablet, too, and I found that I had to go to the KC website via the link Judy posted the other day. It didn’t appear on the Google play site, have to go to the KC website. Butt once I got there I couldn’t get it to load for me. I even restored my tablet to factory condition and lost a lot of data because I was so desperate to get it, but it didn’t work. I’m going to try it in Chrome. Maybe it doesn’t work with Firefox. I left a request for help through their system but didn’t hear from them. I’m sad!
Glenda says
Oh my goodness! I just tried it with chrome instead of Firefox and it worked! Thanks, Judy! I’m really looking forward to learning KC!
