Mr. Bargain Shopper

In Vince’s defense, part of these purchases were my fault. I’m not taking full responsibility and I think you’ll agree with me on that (you’d better!)  🙂

Sunday evening, after 10 hours on the road, I arrived home a little before 6 p.m. Vince said we’d run somewhere and grab a bit to eat. Where do you want to go? I truly didn’t care. I didn’t even care if we didn’t eat. The United supermarket has a deli that serves plate lunch type meals so he asked if I wanted to go there and that was good because I needed to pick up a few things for the week.

As we were making our way to the checkout, we had to pass the mark down section and I spotted tahini paste.

That particular brand is over $7, so for 99¢, it was coming home with us. They had peanut butter and sunflower seed butter in this same brand so, for 99¢ each, they all came home with us too.

Even though I make most of our jams and jellies from the fruit we grow, I cannot grow sour cherries here (but they grow in MO!), nor can I grow raspberries here so I was happy to get these, again . . all for 99¢ each. They sell for right at $8 each on the Stonewall Kitchen website.

Not only do we use jam on toast and biscuits, but I put it in my yogurt sometime as a fruit and sweetener.

The ingredient list is about the same thing I use in my homemade jelly, except for malic acid. I read about it and it doesn’t sound too harmful so, lots of jam and jelly came home with us. I also picked up 2 jars of some kind of pear preserves since my pears don’t seem to want to produce anything.

Probably the best deal was this Really Raw Honey in 1 pound jars. That stuff sells for over $10/pound and yes, we paid 99¢ per one pound jar.

Vince uses raw honey in his coffee and tea and we go through a lot of it. I’ll sometimes mix it with peanut butter and spread it on a banana. One jar is just about the right amount for me for one banana.  🙂  Not really but I do love raw honey. This particular brand, Breitsamer, we’ve only been able to find at T. J. Maxx so when I was at T. J. Maxx in Joplin, I picked up three jars for Vince but look what I paid for each jar!

I’m not complaining because $5.99 is a good price but 99¢ is even better!

We ended up getting 23 items that would have been a bit over $150 but we paid $22.77.  Had I been shopping alone, I would have picked up the tahini paste, a couple of jars of cherry jam and walked away. Not Vince . . he went through every item and found mint jelly, horseradish sauce, and chile sauce in addition to the other items. Every bit of it is stuff we will use and I never mind buying the things I know we’ll use.
