The other day I walked out on the front porch and here was one of these lizards. I don’t even know what kind they are but they should be called racing lizards. You can’t believe how fast these little guys can run. We have a million of these things around and they scare me half to death because when I hear them rustling through the dry grass and leaves, my first thought is SNAKE but when I see how fast they’re moving, I know it’s not a snake.
This one is shedding his skin. I had to laugh thinking of the money some of us spend on facial products – exfoliation and creams, chemical peels, face lifts, etc. And here’s a lowly lizard. His skin gets dull and dry and it just peels right off on its own with a nice, bright, wrinkle free new skin.
Surely would be nice if human skin just peeled away every now and then. Doesn’t hardly seem right that lizards can do that and we can’t.

This post reminds me…do you ever see any Texas Horned Lizards? Or as we kids called them – Horny Toads? It seems they are in decline and a threatened species now. We used to catch them all the time, and let them go. They didn’t move as fast as a racing lizard tho. (I won’t link, but google has nice pics.)

It may be a Five-Lined Skink. They are common in Texas.

If I remember correctly, this is probably a Texas Spotted Whiptail. It has been a long time since I lived in Texas, but they were common in my area at the time. They eat insects and were fond of grasshoppers.
