Back in December I harvested the turmeric I had planted.
This is what I had planted in April, 2015.
I was very pleased with my harvest! I broke off all the little “leg” pieces and we used those. Almost immediately after harveting, I re-planted all the bigger pieces. They did nothing .. just sat there in the dirt without even looking like they were going to sprout.
Don’t ask me why but there was one piece of turmeric that sat in my kitchen from December til this weekend. I’d move it from spot to spot. It was on a saucer, then in a little plastic container, then on a paper towel . . I really don’t know why it never got used but it didn’t. Over the weekend, I noticed it was sprouting so I went out to plant it in the same pot that had all the other non-sprouting turmeric in it.
When I went to put that one in the dirt, I noticed all the others were sprouting too!
My plan is that when I harvest turmeric in the fall or winter, I’ll put the pieces I intend to replant into a paper bag and stick them in a dark spot and save them for planting next spring. No need to plant them til they’re almost ready to sprout . . one less thing in the greenhouse.
It’s the same thing with the ginger. I had re-planted it when I harvested the ginger and it did nothing but is now sprouting. I’ll also just save it or, buy more in the grocery store in the spring and plant that.
Speaking of ginger, we’ve been using a ton of ginger to make kombucha. It’s our favorite!

My ginger is sprouting also. Was thinking It might not have made it but it did. Only moved the pots in doors on the coldest nights. That and my lemon are the only things I am growing this summer. Probably redoing the back porch also. Too much going to keep up with flowers and plants.

Judy, I am making lots of kombucha now, thanks to you. Tell me when and how you use your ginger in it. I too love pickled ginger and cannot find it any place but at Japanese restaurants when they serve it with sushi, which is not my favorite thing.
