The world would be a wonderful place if everyone’s troubles were as small as mine! 🙂
I started Addie’s Mim’s Chevrons last night.
Here’s my problem. I wanted to use these four colors (not counting the gray):
If I only use four colors, that means I will need about 120 yards of each color. I have plenty of all the colors except the green. Plenty as in 400 yards of a couple of them. The green . . I only have 150 yards. Can I cut it that close?
The pattern says for a size 6, which is what I’m making, I need 550 yards of the contrast. Looking at the projects, I see where someone made a size 6 and used 15 stripes. She had 5 colors and she used them all three times. In her notes, she says that she used about 96.3 yards of each. Five times 96.3 yards means she used 481 yards of contrasting color. That’s about right because the patterns usually add about 10 – 12% for “just in case”.
I do see in the picture that one of the aquas is lighter than the others but that one can be left out or used on its own and it will never show that it’s lighter in this project.
To me, the aqua just doesn’t go and I had not wanted to use it but if I don’t use it get to the end and am short, I can’t get any more of this yarn . . then what would I do? Make another peach or pink stripe out of sequence? Use the aqua as a 5th color and include it throughout the sweater?
In the picture of the size 6, the green would be my very last row and if I had to leave that off, I guess I could and just make the bottom ribbing a bit wider.
I always buy more yarn than I’ll need because I never like to run short and I don’t want to have to worry about running short but for this one, I had planned on making a size 4 when I bought the pattern and yarn 1-1/2 years ago but now I’m making the size 6.
Looking at the numbers, I shouldn’t run short but . . what if I do? What would you do?
Here’s my progress so far.
It’s going to be so cute .. no matter how I have to work out those colors!

Sounds to me like you’ll have plenty of the green – need 120, you have 150, and the pattern has probably added 10% already. I’d probably forge ahead using it, and leave the aqua out. But then again, I’m making my Hitofude with no idea if I have enough yarn or not 🙂 (OK, by now I’m pretty sure I’m good, but I started on a whim and a prayer)

Go for it! It looks like a great start. I love chevrons. My GKs keep outgrowing my patterns, too!

I would just go ahead with it using the green and not the aqua, it seems like you have enough. Then if you run short, like you said you can add a little more ribbing to make sure the sweater is long enough.

I’d go for it too. You have 30 yards more than what it calls for. That’s quite a bit…

LOL you are asking the wrong person here ! I always buy more than I need for my crocheting as I don’t want to run out. So I end up making a scarf (or two or fingerless gloves (or two) for the granddaughters to wear.
Do whatever your instincts tell you to do and then run those needles like they were on fire and whip it up !LOL
