This morning I was video chatting with Nicole and looked at the clock and knew I had to get off the computer and get lunch ready before Vince got home. About the time I started getting pots and pans out, I realized . . he isn’t coming home for lunch today so I decided to start a batch of yogurt and a batch of cottage cheese. I’m not confident with my cheese making that I can deviate from the instructions but right in the middle of making the cheese, I heard Vince drive up.
Oh no . . he isn’t supposed to be home! I have nothing fixed for lunch! But, he had to go by Tractor Supply for something else and they had Buckeye baby chicks. I had never heard of Buckeyes (chickens) til a friend in TN was getting chickens and they had researched and researched which ones to get and they decided on Buckeyes and had to about walk across hot coals to find some. I had never seen them at Tractor Supply and Vince said people were buying them like crazy so he was lucky he went in when he did.
I’m going to have to go back and look at the babies because that one in the middle . . that very light one . . that doesn’t look like a Buckeye to me but I don’t remember seeing one that light in real life so it may be just a lighting issue but . . we may have gotten something besides a Buckeye. It’s ok. We’ll love it just the same.
These were straight run chicks so that means at least half of them will be roosters. We may keep one rooster but any others will go into the pot when they’re big enough.
And so . . the cycle of raising baby chicks begins again. Today is probably the day my hens will all go broody and want to hatch their own babies.
