We’ve had so many days in the 80’s already but today . . it’s cold and windy (50+ mph gusts) and feels like 37º right now. It would be a nice day to sit inside and listen to the wind blow but that is not how my afternoon/evening will be spent.
As beautiful as they are, this is what you never want to see here in February.
The peach trees are blooming. All the trees are budding out in fact.
Wednesday and Thursday nights, both nights our low is predicted to be 28º. That low shouldn’t hurt the peach blossoms that haven’t opened yet but the ones that are already opened may be ruined. There are plenty that haven’t opened so I’m not going to even be concerned about it!
The first year we had fruit trees, we ran around trying to cover them up but the wind is gusts, there’s no easy way to keep the trees wrapped. We just hope for the best. Anything that depends on Mother Nature is never guaranteed and this year is no exception.
Once again, the mesquite tree has not been honest with me! It’s all budded out and now another freeze.

When I was a kid in Southern California, I remember the orchards spraying water on the orange trees when the weather was going to be below freezing. The ice kept the branches at 32 degrees and gave it some insulation.

It turned cold here too. I’d been enjoying the warmer weather and guess I was lulled into thinking it would stay. Then I had to remind myself, it’s still February. Bummer.
We had a fruiting pear tree yrs ago. We thought it died, but were waiting to see for sure. It sprouted a new tree from the base. The former bearing trunk and branches did die. We cut that out and waited to see what would happen. Because the fruit bearing part was grafted onto hardier rootstock that wouldn’t bear, we ended up with the most beautiful ORNAMENTAL pear tree. It’s fully in bloom and gorgeous right now. It will probably get bit. Oh, well. Enjoying it today.
