Tractor Sprinkler

Sometimes I wonder if you readers feel I should be a salesman instead of a blog writer. A lot of the links for various items I tell you about are Amazon links and yes, most of the time they’re affiliate links, meaning I make a dollar or two if you order things but the one thing I want you to always know is that I would never recommend to you something that I haven’t already purchased and love. Every now and then, I’ll see something and think . . that would be great, but when it arrives, it isn’t so great so you never hear about those things! On the other hand, I learn so much from the blogs I read and from folks who share, or friends who share. Being the non-shopper that I am, I would never see things like Better than Bouillon or a tractor sprinkler had someone else not told me about it.

Our friends’ son gave them a tractor sprinkler by Orbit for Christmas and being dry in January, they got it hooked up right away and when they showed us, I came home and ordered two of them.

I am so in love with this sprinkler. First, I’m a dingbat and I’ll turn the sprinkler on and forget about it and end up with one mudhole and the rest of the yard dry. This one travels along a 5/8″ water hose and there’s a little stop that you set and when it gets there, it turns itself off. Done! Second, by changing the angle of the sprinkler arms, you change the speed at which it travels, and that changes how far out the water is dispersing, along with how much water is being spread on any one area. It just seems so much easier and more accurate than most other sprinklers we’ve tried . . especially as far as getting an even and consistent amount of water over a given area. The tractor is pretty heavy duty . . not too heavy for me to move around but it’s definitely heavy so I’m hoping that equates to durability but we’ve been using it two days now so I really can’t speak about durability.

Here’s how it works . . very simply! Hook it up to a 5/8″ hose and turn it on.  The front tractor wheel fits over the hose and somehow (don’t ask me how . . it just does!) the water turns those little sprinkler arms and that somehow (don’t ask me how!) moves the sprinkler down the hose. You can use as long of a hose as you can find. I’m not sure you could hook hoses together and have the tractor go over the connection so I wouldn’t recommend that. Connect the hose to the tractor, position the front wheel centered over the hose and turn the water on.

Looking at my brown grass, there isn’t much hope that I’ll ever have a lush, green yard but this sprinkler gives me hope. As opposed as I am to chemical weed killers, we really need to spray weed killer on our entire yard, till it up and replant a good grass seed. Having a healthy, thick covering of grass is the best way to choke out grass burs and we desperately need to get rid of those . . for the sake of the dogs and our own feet. 

It isn’t totally foolproof. I wouldn’t leave it running and go on vacation because every now and then, it will bog itself down. The first time I used it, I had the stopper set a little too close to the end of the hose so it didn’t seat itself just right in order to trip the turn off switch. Also, if you have a spot with no grass, that’s going to be wet and even though the tractor tires have good sized nubs or spikes, it can still get bogged down in wet dirt. I would love to use it in the garden but it will bog down in freshly tilled ground.

A lot of folks have lawn irrigation systems and wouldn’t have a need for something like this but for those of us who live out in the country with no irrigation system, this sprinkler is about as perfect as it gets!
