Maybe it’s a slow blog day but here’s a somewhat useless little poll for you and I would appreciate your response!
Here’s why I’m asking. I love it! I could put it in my Dr. Pepper and I would think it’s delicious. On my scrambled eggs . . yum! On the other hand, Vince doesn’t like it at all! He would be happy if they left it out of salsa.
Cilantro almost grows wild in my garden. It’s a rare occasion that I go out to the garden to pick a bunch of cilantro that I don’t munch on a few gritty leaves while walking back to the house. I don’t even think about it . . I just love it.
My first inclination is to put a little cilantro in everything. I’ve had to learn that Vince can taste cilantro, no matter how little I put in a dish, and no matter how long I cook it .. he just cannot get past the taste. I’m kinda the same with oregano and he loves that. He cannot understand how anyone wouldn’t love oregano and I can’t understand how anyone doesn’t love cilantro. Maybe that should be a question all young lovers should ask each other before saying “I do!” Do you like cilantro? Can you eat cilantro in every dish I cook . . til death do us part?
Nowadays, instead of adding cilantro to our meals, it’s served in a little bowl and I can add as much as I want and Vince can add as little as he wants . . which usually is zero!
I guess in the end, it really doesn’t matter what we like or dislike, so long as we can have what we like and avoid what we dislike but still . . how can anyone not love cilantro? 😉

You have to have the right receptor for cilantro, or else it tastes soapy.
Tis soapy to me.

Yes that is my same comment. Soap!

I love it! My current favorite use is in pesto, which I usually serve over pork loin or veggies. It makes a great stir in for rice too.

Jerry and I love it – always have it on hand. We do have friends who can’t stand it – usually the DH who does not like it. It is in the guac I made for watching the Super Bowl….Yum!

It’s not something that I normally have on hand, but we do like it.
I use it in a hand full of recipes and have some in the fridge now. Maybe will use it in a tortilla soup since its suppose to be a snow day tomorrow.

I agree with Vince!

Here in Australia we know it as Coriander. I have found it difficult to grow. It is wonderful chopped up in either turkey or chicken rissoles, which also has sweet chilli sauce, plain yoghurt, onion and fish sauce in it.

I love them both!

Do you let some go to seed for coriander? I like that, too.

I hate cilantro. It has a soapy taste to me.

I read an article on this a long time ago — because I too hate the taste. I went and looked for it – has to do with the way the brain smells … and then associates with taste – for a small portion of the population, it does taste like soap –

I don’t care anymore for cilantro as it tastes like soap to me (according to my allergist: its an allery to the herb). But there are so many wonderful mexican recipes that call for it, and since the hubs likes it I cook with it. But I sure hope in another 7 years my taste buds change so I can once more enjoy it. LOL

LOL..I’ve always heard you either love it or hate it. I’m with MrsB…tis soapy to me too! Gary feels the same way so this is a Cilantro free zone. 🙂 However, I feel about good green chile the way you feel about Cilantro…I eat it on everything!

Judy,
How do you grow it? Do you plant in spring or when. I would love to be able to have it fresh instead of buying at store where is comes from “who knows where”.Does it grow all year long for you? Thanks

They say there is a genetic thingy (yes that is the tech term) for a predisposition of love / hate cilantro.
That being said in my house there is always a container of chopped cilantro and onion in the fridge ready to cook with or add a fresh bright touch to a dish. Hubby considers it part of his green veggie intake.

Tastes soapy to me, too. I had it in my garden in California, it’s invasive, so I had to plant it in a pot.

A nutritionist told me that some people are just preordained to taste cilantro as soapy. Nothing you can do about it. I can get that soapy taste if there is just a touch of cilantro in a dish and it ruins the dish.

I checked the second choice, which seems more lukewarm than I really feel, but I don’t “absolutely” love it!
I have a friend who enjoys it very much, but does NOT like fresh ginger (tastes like soap). I thought that it was the same compound in both, so that’s puzzling to me. A quick search showed several articles about genetic dislike, but I saw references to “some genetic influence, but some mental effect.” Must be what’s up with her??

p.s. The retreat center had a vegetable soup that seemed bitter and unpleasant to me, although others liked it. Someone said she thought it was a lot of oregano, and I think that was it! I like oregano (used properly) but this was just overwhelming!

Cilantro has a soapy taste to me as well, but my hubby loves it. We compromise and he adds it as as garnish.
