One lesson I learned is to get the buttons before choosing the colors on something like the striped sweater. I checked everywhere – Hobby Lobby, Hancock’s, Walmart, the local sewing store, and JoAnn’s and the primary colored buttons just aren’t bright and clear colored. When I first made this sweater, I envisioned having polka dot buttons and when I found these at JoAnn’s in Joplin, I knew that was as close as I was going to get, even though the colors aren’t perfect.
At first I had planned to randomly place the buttons . . not lining them up with their matching stripes but after Nicole placed them lined up and not lined up, we liked them better lined up.
Of course, the little munchkin was happy to model it for us.
The sweater is a size 6 and she’s barely a size 4. I figured she had all the sweaters she needed for this year but she was so happy with it, I’m guessing she will wear it this winter . . even though it’s too big.

Lovely sweater. It’s amazing how much Addie has changed, she’s starting to look so old and she is beautiful.

Judy – a fabulous cardigan and the buttons look terrific. I can understand that you would have preferred colours that matched exactly, but these work just fine and actually add more whimsy to it.

It is precious! The buttons are a great match. You can see the joy she experiences in wearing it and I know it touches your heart to know that your labor of love is so appreciated and will one day be cherished as it is passed on to the next generation. Love it, love it. As for button constraints, I remember when finding the perfect match of fabric, buttons, zippers and threads was never a concern. Now, we have to craft items in the limited palette that is manufactured each year since the sources are much more limited than they were in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Have you considered using polymer clay to make buttons? It allows you an infinite palette and I have found it to work wonderfully when I needed a specific button color for my oh so picky daughter.
