I never know whether to laugh or cry when I think about some of Vince’s activities. We have friends who drive miles and miles, hours and hours (Chad included) to get to where they can hunt. We have friends who lease or buy hunting places. Some have little huts where they sleep; some have RVs. These hunters are serious hunters! They fill their feeders religiously. They have expensive deer blinds. They dress up in camo . . head to toe! They sneak out to said blinds way before daylight and sit there and barely breathe so as not to frighten any deer who may be headed their way.
Vince, on the other hand, has his “blind” set up on the front porch, with a swivel comfy office chair. He sits inside in his recliner, wearing his sweatpants and green shirt, occasionally looking out the window. When he sees a deer, he very quietly goes out the front door to his “blind”.
I understand that for most folks, hunting is more about the sport, or the guys being together. For Vince, it’s pretty much about putting free food on the table. Food with no hormones, no antibiotics, food that was raised right here in the vicinity of where we live.
Don’t anyone get all “animal rights” on me. We all believe different things and we all have the right to our beliefs. We only kill what we will eat, we don’t kill to have a trophy on the wall. Vince has never even killed half as many as we’re allowed to kill. Here, there are so many deer that if hunters didn’t thin them out a bit, the overpopulation would result in malnutrition and other issues. So, we’re responsible hunters and we’ll be happy to have a couple of does in the freezer or canned for our future dinners.

Yum! No complaint from me. I love venison and only wish my hubby was a hunter.

Eat what you kill and enjoy the meat. It is ok with me. I don’t have problem with that at all. Only when for trophies do I get on my soap box. Animals weren’t put here to to killed and stuffed. They are food if you need them. Vince has one terrific setup. Kitchen, bathroom and wife near by who could ask for more. I wish him luck to fill those freezer today.

If things get tough and money gets tight you could open a Bed and Breakfast for deer hunters. You could feed them well and they could bunk in the out building! or have private accommodations in one of the empty chicken coops. I’m sure they’d pay big bucks to stay with you two!

I sure wish my son would send me some ground venison, makes the very best meatloaf and hamburgers!!!
I’m good with hunting for food. 🙂

Mine’s out hunting too. Here’s hoping we both have venison to process by the end of the hunt.

Had to share this with my husband who as well is a hunter but one who travels far, far to do so. He thinks Vince should rent out his space Lol.

looks like our hunting ‘blind.’ the venison sure tastes good and helps save on the grocery bill. just talked to a friend who cans elk but says that venison tastes different when canned rather than frozen and she doesn’t care for it canned. do you can venison, and do you think it tastes different rather than when it’s frozen?
JudyL says
I can everything except what we’re going to grill (tenderloins and backstrap) and I don’t can what we’re going to grind but everything else gets canned. I like it much better when canned instead of frozen.

Works for me as long as it is not wasted.. which you most certainly do not.
Fresh venison is quite healthful, and in CT is was true.. the deer were so prevalent that they were needed to be culled. Humane hunters were allowed to keep some, and the rest were prepared, and the meat donated to food shelters. A logical solution to a growing problem.

There’ve been days when my husband could have shot a deer from our bedroom window… “could have” not “would have.” If he wants to go hunting, he heads out into the woods. The deer on our place are safe.
Sounds like Vince has an efficient plan!

“Animal rights”? This is the most defensible form of hunting…for actual use! Also, this is so much more humane than factory farming. And ecological. etc. It looks like Vince got one, so GO Vince! How wonderful that he doesn’t have to go to all the effort so many do.
