Because it’s been so long since I showed this quilt, here’s the drawing again.
I made a test block for the alternating star block:
On the star blocks, they’re all going to have the same purple, the same yellow and the same white. For the green, should I:
- Use the same green in all 12 star blocks?
- Use 6 different greens so that 2 blocks are the same (I’m using Triangulations and get enough to make 2 blocks per set)?
- Use 4 different greens in each block and use 10 or 12 (0r more) different greens total? (That would mean the one block I’ve already made wouldn’t work but that’s ok.)
Your answer cannot be “whatever makes me happy”. I’m really wanting to know what you think, ok? Thanks!
Julie in Tucson, AZ says
I think I would use the same green in all the blocks!

me too…

me three …

Me four

I’d use four of the same color triangles where the green goes but they might not all be green, you could use the red, orange, blue, light green, etc but keep the four triangles the same in each blocks. Same as it the ‘snow ball’ looking blocks. But then I like things really scrappy. But if you can’t bring yourself to be that scrappy just stick with four of the same color triangles in as many greens as you have or can stand. 😉

Must admit I like the look of multi fabrics in the one colour family. That is, lots of greens in the green blocks, lots of golds etc. Just really like the movement I get with many shades of the same colour.
Laceflower says
My vote if for 6 different greens, variation will help ameliorate the wallpaper look.
Quilting Tangent says
You can use different greens. I would put the yellow diamond back into the star, the white draws to much attention.
Cynthia says
The last option. I like the different shades of green. The bright green you are using draws my eye to it again and again and I find that slightly distracting.
Maggie says
I like different greens in the quilt, but keep the triangles within each block the same green, just change them block to block.
Frieda Z. says
I would probably use different greens from block to block(12 greens) or 2 blocks from the same green (6 different). Either way it is a fun quilt!
Lynn says
I really like the constants in the star block in the EQ7 block, but would proably go for several in the same shade myself. That doesnt really make sense, but quilt decisions in my life often dont
Breck says
6 different greens! It’s nice to have some scrappy variety in quilts to add interest and movement.
Dotti says
I think you could use various greens, however in the sample block, the green is so dark that there is very little contrast between the blue and the green. The brighter green gives it some sparkle. She is going to love it. How is the knitting going?

JudyL says
The green is a bit too dark but what you’re seeing is more of an issue with the bad lighting in the sewing room.
Knitting is going great!
Dottie N. says
I think I would probably want to stay with the same greens…..unless you have a few of the same greens (different shades of the same green – lime green medium, lime green dark, etc. if that makes sense :-). Dottie

at first I thought maybe Quilting Tangent says had had a brain cramp with suggesting to put the yellow back in the center of the star, but looking again, I totally agree there.. I like the same greens in the stars but I do think that variations should give it lots of movement 🙂
Susan says
Since I’m scrappy scrappy the majority of the time, and only sometimes controlled at all, I’d say the more the merrier, but you’d have to be comfortable with that approach. How many greens did you use in the snowball blocks? Maybe let that be your guide.
Firelei Jones says
Actually the way Roberta describes her suggestion is exactly what I was thinking. A single different color in each of the star blocks….but maybe color it in EQ first? I believe my second choice might be to stay with one green for all. But it would be kinda fun on the eye to hop around and see different green patterns. I do know whatever you decide will look wonderful! I suggest you not spend too much time pondering and getting bogged down in the planning. I suspect it will do you good to sit and sew for a bit.
Diane Wagner says
I agree with Quilting Tangent – Use different greens. Put the yellow diamond back into the star, the white draws to much attention.
Robin says
I have trouble with scrappy myself but since you are keeping the yellows the same, I would keep the greens the same in each block. I also agree that the yellow center looked better.
PattiLynn says
I like the yellow center better, and I think I would keep all the greens the same. On my computer the green is too dark (to my eye). It blends into the purple too much.
I’d probably make 2 more blocks, using 2 different lighter greens. Then I’d eyeball it all again to decide whether to mix the greens up or go all the same.
I fiddle around too much sometimes, but sometimes I can’t visualize the outcomes.
Bon says
Option 2.
Gale says
I agree with Roberta. More shades give it more sparkle. And definitely put the yellow back in the center of the star block. Actually I like a little deeper gold than the yellow you are using.
Kay L Ford-Sollimo says
As some others have said… I prefer the yellow/gold center in the star block, but I do like the idea of as many greens as play well together (uniform within each star block, of course).
Rebecca in SoCal says
There’s enough variety in the snowballs that one green would work, but if you can find six greens similar enough to each other to not grab the eye, option 2 would be nice, too.
I agree with “one green per star”!
Sherry V says
I would keep the green the same. You have the scrappiness in the other blocks and you are keeping the rest of the colors in the star blocks the same.
