Apparently all the spiders around the farm are getting their Halloween decorations out! It doesn’t matter where I walk out there but you can bet I’m going to get tangled up in spider webs. They are everywhere! The webs are bad enough but I keep thinking . . where’s the spider? In my hair? Down my shirt? On my neck?
This one is out by chicken coop #1. I figure so long as the spider is there and I see it, that’s one less spider I have to look out for. This one has been out there for about a week. The wind was blowing so it was hard to get a clear picture.
This giant spider has been inside the greenhouse for about 10 days. I took the picture from the outside looking in because it was pretty dark inside already.
Can you see the little zig zaggy web?
Ugh! If you’re feeling spiders crawling up your leg, think how I must feel.
You know that things are better (as in less crazy critters) than there were when settlers first arrived in these woods. How on earth did people survive and why did they stay here? There are reasons that we stay here but I can tell you . . if we were just passing through, looking for a place to claim our homestead . . it would NOT have been here. I can bloom where I’m planted but you can bet . . if I got to choose where I was planted . . this is not the spot!

A few weeks ago there was a spider on a plant right outside the back door that had made a zigzaggy web like this. My sister-in-law saw it and said it was a “bad” spider and I should kill it. I sprayed a whole bottle of bug killer on it and it didn’t do a thing. I had to knock it down to the ground and then smash it with a flower pot. I didn’t want Penny to walk into it. I hate spiders almost as much as I hate snakes!

Found a Brown Recluse in my dining room last week. The body was the size of my thumb joint, and ever since I’ve been worrying about where the rest of the family is hiding!

We have several huge orbweavers in our yard. Huge nests and huge spiders the size of my hand. The webs are spectacular things of beauty.

The spiders here come out in the fall, too! And somehow a few always get in the house where they aren’t particularly welcome. We did catch an interesting photo though the other morning; it’s on my blog and I find myself wishing I could make lace like that!

I read somewhere that an abundance of spider webs in the fall means a hard winter. Here in Charleston, WV I see spider webs wherever I go. We sweep down the webs on the front porch every day and have to do it again the next day.

I think that that might be what is called a Letter Writer Spider. Not all spiders are bad, and the Letter Writer certainly isn’t. Think Charlotte’s Web, she was a Letter Writer Spider. They eat lots of bugs, especially those that harm your plants. I don’t like walking into a web either, but I don’t like mosquitos and they eat them for me. 🙂

JUST WHEN THERE SEEMS TO BE A JUSTIFICATION FOR KILLING A CRITTER, YOU FIND OUT THERE ARE BENEFITS TO TOLERATING THEM!
