Vince has talked to Schacht (wheel manufacturer) and I’ve sent them pictures and it seems the wheel may be beyond repair. It took quite a blow from whatever came through the bottom of the two boxes and reinforcement that was placed between the two boxes.
If the pedal is attached to the bar in the correct position, it rubs on the back frame of the wheel. If it’s attached to the bar in any other position, it’s impossible to treadle that left pedal so, for now, I have lots of beautiful fiber and no wheel! 🙁
I’m pretty disappointed but went ahead and filed on the insurance claim with UPS and will wait and see what they do. Not only am I sad that I don’t have a wheel to use, after waiting and being so excited to get it, but it makes me sad that a beautiful wheel that should have been around for generations has been ruined by total carelessness. As I was telling my friend yesterday . . it’s just a wooden object. There are lives ruined every day by carelessness so I’m thankful that it was “just” a wheel and not something I’ll spend a lifetime mourning.

Still, it doesn’t speak well of UPS. It’s especially egregious because of the “Fragile” labels!
I wish I could remember which carrier sent a frozen meat order in a thick styrofoam cooler. When it arrived, I noticed a large hole in front taped over. When we opened it, the whole thing fell apart! Fortunately, the meat was still frozen.
What a disappointment for you after your eagerness. I suppose it can be fixed? That’s something about a quality, wooden object that plastic can’t reproduce.

It cost about $150 to ship it from CO to here with insurance so by the time I shipped it back to CO (manufacturer) and they shipped it back and added any cost of repairs, it probably would cost close to replacement cost. We’ll see how UPS wants to handle it.
I think what does upset me almost as much as losing the wheel is the fact that they ignored the Fragile warnings. There are holes all over that box . . top, bottom and all sides except one.

Such a shame Judy. I hope you get a satisfactory resolution.

I hope you wind up with a new, undamaged wheel when this is all over. And that it doesn’t take months!

Hope UPS takes care of this satisfactorily for everyone…..They should also take your photos and use them to show personnel how to pay attention to ALL notices on the shipping boxes.

Sounds like someone (or someones) working at UPS isn’t very happy with his/her job. What a bummer. Hopefully they make it right and you’ll soon get a new one to play with. Until then you can keep on knitting!

It’s just a bummer that people can’t do their jobs well and take pride in their work. Maybe a disgruntled employee?

I watched UPS back their big brown truck out of my drive way and run it right into the tree limb there. Broke off a big limb and just drove off. My Husband called the company and they came out and looked at the thing right then (two men in the car). Went down the road where the truck went ( I suspect the driver was sacked right then.) You know we would have said no problem if the driver had gotten out and said oh I am so sorry about your tree. But no he just took off.
After all if he could get in by the tree he could have gotten out too.

Is it just me or is it that no one care about other people things these days. I know UPS is on a tight schedule but you pay good money to ship stuff. They make a profit and enjoy their pay checks. But things like this makes me sick; They wouldn’t want their stuff ruined by some joker.
I would make them pay for the damage. If the part doesn’t fix the problem them get a new one( whole thing) on them they broke it. That is the only way to stop the problems is to get them in the pocketbook. Sad but true,
I’m sorry you won’t get to use it for a long while it sounds like. You were so excited about trying it out.

That is a very sad story and not good advertising for UPS. Sure hope you get it replaced!!!
