Do you want the good news or the bad news first? It’s ok . . the bad news isn’t terrible and the good news isn’t definite so . . I guess it’s a slow blog day! 🙂
Really, I’m not feeling sorry for myself. I’m so thankful the ceiling wasn’t damaged and I’m so thankful this didn’t happen in one of those areas where termites are ready to devour your home overnight. It all could have been so much worse and more costly to repair.
When Vince first told the repair guy about the problem, before he came out, he said “I have the perfect caulking to go around the rock chimney! It should be an easy fix.”
Then he came out and realized it was a little more involved. He was going to have to take off the metal roofing all the way to the full pieces on either side of the chimney.
Yesterday he got all the metal off that needed to come off, when he discovered not only that there was no flashing apparently ever installed, but there were rotten boards.
That’s not what we were hoping to find but it can be fixed and soon, everything will be good as new. He’s hoping to finish up today, hen start on gutters for the implement shed.
After several years of asking for gutters across the shop .. where the carport is, and asking for water storage tanks to capture the rain water . . I think Vince is entertaining the idea of doing that. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed for the gutters and tank project. You will never regret it. Hope the roof works out well.

I got a really nice rain barrel when I moved to this house but on further inspection and reading all the info, I figured out pretty quickly that I would not be able to set it up myself AND it would be needed to removed each winter and then reinstalled each spring. It still sits in my shed!!! 🙁

I’m not surprised, with no flashing. When I had my roof redone- they added flashing where it should have been and wasn’t, and replaced an area that had rotted where water got in. If you own a house, there’s always something. One reason I think about selling and renting somewhere in Texas. =) Rain barrels are great water collectors, but then … you’d need some rain! =)

Check to make sure it’s legal to capture rain water in your area and re-use it. Crazy as it sounds, it’s illegal in Colorado to do that. The rainfall belongs to the state and not to the land owner that it falls on. Unbelievable! A Google search for “Colorado rain water law” gives some good sources.

Sheryl, that’s crazy!
The city of San Diego is offering rain barrel rebates. The idea is using the water for your landscaping.
