Doing the Eat, Sleep, Knit Yarnathon this year has been a good reminder for me to get out of my box! Despite my determination to get all the badges and finish all the Knit Alongs, a million reasons ran through my head as to why I would not and should not attempt to spin just to get one little badge. But then the competitive side of my brain won out and I ordered a drop spindle for $16 and I ordered some roving for about the same price and now . . I’m taking spinning classes and contemplating buying a spinning wheel.
Then there was the Knit Along that required making mitered squares. I resisted but that competitive side of my brain won out again and I love my finished project. This is the Montague Street Cowl, which I changed up just a bit.
Weird that I would happen to still have my lime green sweater on the dress form and it all matches perfectly!
I made a few changes to the pattern. First, the pattern is written to be knit more like a scarf and then joined in a circle with buttons and buttonholes but I didn’t want to always have to be fidgeting with the cowl to be sure the buttons were in the front and not in the back so I did a provisional cast on and then grafted the ends together.
I also added a couple of rows of garter stitch between the blocks just to make the cowl a couple of inches longer.
Instead of the garter stitch bands at the top and bottom, I changed that to 2 x 2 ribbing.
This, which was a piece I was kind of dreading doing, is one of my new favorites. I love it!
Now, here’s where I give you the “you have to make one too” speech: It takes 2 skeins of Cascade 220, which is a very inexpensive yarn, and it holds up wonderfully well and comes in a whole bunch of colors. I made this project, start to finish, in 4 days. I think this would make such a great gift . . in someone’s favorite colors or even school colors. It was just challenging enough to hold my attention but not to require too much concentration. I love it!
