Since grass doesn’t seem to grow around here unless someone puts a whole lot of effort into it and no one around here does, anywhere we walk becomes a beaten down dirt path. The way to the chicken coop/garden was such a dirt path and when it rains, because the dirt is so packed down, it becomes very slippery. Last winter when we had ice for days and days, as it melted off the shop roof, it ran down this path and it stayed a muddy, slippery mess so I had asked Vince to put some rock down. At first, he resisted. I think he was remembering a nicely manicured yard and thinking just randomly spreading rock everywhere we walk was not a good idea but . . he’s not the one making 20 trips a day to the chicken coop and garden.
In the spring, I’m going to plant some mint around that single tree. It should be safe to plant it there . . maybe it won’t make it to the garden or the house . . hopefully the rock with keep it contained. There may be something I can plant around that clump of trees but the chickens love to scratch in that area so maybe I’ll just leave it as part of the chicken play yard.
I’m loving my new path! I think the rock also helps dig the grass burrs out of my shoes before I get back to the house.

Nothing but NOTHING will keep mint contained!

I agree with Adrienne. I planted mint in a container on my back porch – one story up and 20-25 feet from the grassline. I had mint in the grass! I’m guessing that the birds ate it and it seeded from their droppings, but I don’t really know for sure. Good luck!
