Cat is still here. I’m going to refer to her as a “he” because Vince is so sure it’s a he but I’m so sure it’s a she, simply because tortoise shell cats are almost always girls but . . Vince can be right . . because I know I’m really right! 🙂
This morning we were talking about dogs and how they’re kinda like most humans. Speck and Rita watch each other and they do whatever the other one is doing .. just like most humans. Speck goes out without a leash because he’ll barely get off the porch. He’ll wander around out there all day if I let him but when Rita is out on a leash, he watches her. If she heads back towards the door, Speck will run to the door because he wants to be first in the house.
Cat on the other hand, doesn’t give a flip what anyone else does. He does what he wants to do without regard to anyone or anything else.
He’s been sleeping on the picnic table. I think he’s figured out that the first thing we do each morning is take the dogs out the back door so if he’s sleeping on the picnic table, he sees us when we go out with the dogs.
He gets off the picnic table and watches to see what we’re doing next. If I’m the first one out, I go to the chicken coops to let them out and Cat watches til I’m almost done and then he makes his way to his food bowl.
He still isn’t friendly but he isn’t nearly so jumpy and scared as he once was. He’s been hanging out in the garden during the day .. hopefully keeping snakes out of there because it’s getting to be time for me to start planting the fall garden and I’d rather not share that space with snakes!

Cat is probably female, but it won’t stop her from being a great predator for your mice and snakes. Even if she’s well fed, I’d expect to see a big reduction in the mouse population.

Observing the habits of cats can be fun but they are very secretive and don’t want you to know what they are thinking! I can never predict anything where either of our cats where settle in ……. For the past two days, our grey flannel tuxedo has “discovered” the chair in front of the air conditioner She now settles there for hours at a time. The AC has been in use for months and the chair has always been there.

For sure your cat is a girl. There are almost never boy torti cats. I read up on the genetics once and forget the why, but you are right. Same with calico cats. It will be interesting to see how well she hunts. My two calico cats are the best hunters out of the 4 I have.
