This morning I was headed out to pick some basil and I noticed the cat sitting near the edge of the yard. He’s usually on the other side of the house, towards the woods. See him sitting near the pipe fence?
Since Sears is bringing the new freezer today, I didn’t let the chickens run loose (they will get in the truck when no one is watching!) but I knew the three chicks would be running loose because they know exactly where they can squeeze under the fence.
I didn’t want the cat to catch one (or all) of them so I went to see what he was watching.
Rabbits! He’s watching two bunnies. I know he isn’t hungry . . I fed him this morning. I guess a cat is going to be a cat . . hungry or not.
When I got a little close, he turned and walked away . . like he had no intentions of causing harm to the bunnies.
I don’t like him heading towards the highway but, calling a cat back does no good at all. Hopefully I’ll see him back this evening wanting to be fed.
These guys should be thanking me. I probably just saved them from becoming a cat trophy! We have enough rabbits around here that we surely wouldn’t miss them but I don’t want the cat getting them either . . like I have any say in what he does!

When our son was about 10 he had no friends due to ADHD behavior problems. So I prayed God would send him a friend that could tolerate his overabundance of energy.
One day soon after Thanksgiving a yellow and white cat started hanging around our house. He was covered in fleas and filthy like he had been rolling in dirt. He was so dirty I wouldn’t allow him in the house. Neighbors started calling and asking if we were missing a cat because they thought he was ours and he would go to their houses looking for food. My son loved him and wanted to keep him. So I took him to the Vet for a flea dip and he became our son’s cat.
I had tried giving him a female kitten about 1.5 years before but that cat wouldn’t let him touch her–he was too rough. This male cat was about 7 months old and just loved our son. As soon as he picked him up the cat went limp and would let him do anything to it he wanted. If anyone else tried to touch the cat he’d run off. We named him Tommy Santa Paws since it was nearly Christmas until we got him cleaned up and he became a member of the family.
Our son had Tommy until he grew up and got married. He always responded to our son the same. I always teased our son that when I prayed for a friend for him I forgot to specify one with two legs. LOL
Tommy’s biggest problem was eating baby bunnies. I had no idea that the sound a baby bunny makes when it is scared is the same sound of a squeaky toy. Tommy moved with us from Kansas to South Dakota and the city there had a leash law for cats as well as dogs. Tommy had always been a mostly outdoors cat so we tried various ways of leashing him when he went out and weren’t always successful.
I helped our son wake up to do a newspaper delivery route and at 5am the rabbits were out in force. They were all over the place, even in the streets! No wonder everyone complained about rabbits eating their gardens. They had no natural predators to keep them under control. After that I didn’t mind Tommy doing his thing with the bunnies. I thought the city should allow cats freedom outside and their rabbit problem would be kept under control.
So if you want, you can just think of your feral cat as your garden patrol, keeping the rabbit population under control.
