Rita loves Vince! She isn’t like Speck . . he loves me and he’d just as soon take Vince’s arm off as look at him. I don’t think Rita has a hateful bone in her little body. The other day friends were over and their son and his fiance were in. Rita didn’t know him and he’s a big guy . . 6’6″ at least. He was taking giant steps towards her and being kinda loud and Rita was barking at him with her hair all raised up on her back. She never tried to snap at him but she wanted nothing to do with him.
When Vince goes outside, this is where Rita sits . .
She can sit on the back of the sofa and look out one door, turn the other direction and look out that door and she’s always waiting for him to come into view.
On the days he’s working, either she knows by my actions or what’s on the radio but it seems she knows when it’s almost time for him to get home and she hops back up on the back of the sofa and watches for him. I can always tell when he’s driving in by Rita’s excitement!
The good news is . . no accidents in the house in at least two weeks. I’m liking that!

When I was growing up we had a cat who met us at the corner bus stop after school. We rode a city bus, so how he could determine which bus was ours ….
Animals are amazing.

We recently had to put our 14 year old toy poodle to sleep. She had been the best dog we ever had, so smart and obedient. When we were living in Sioux Falls there was a big annual hot air balloon rally near our house. They would have a dawn take off in a field about 3/4 of a mile down the hill from where we lived. They would fly over our house really low because we were on the highest area near the field. Usually they were silent unless they turned on the burners to add heat to the balloon and make it rise. One morning I had just let Holly, the toy poodle, out onto the deck so she could go down into the yard and do her business. All of a sudden their was this really loud woosh sound. Holly and I looked up and there was a balloon right over our deck–it looked like it was going to land on us. It scared Holly something awful. She and I ran in the house and I calmed her down.
One night she was barking at something in the bedroom and sounded really scared. I went to see what the problem was and saw she was barking at the ceiling fan. We had replaced it recently and they were sold out of the one I wanted so I had to take one that was really too fancy for my taste. It had a bowl shaped section that fit flat against the ceiling and had small lights in it, as well as the blades, and the regular flower shaped lights below the fan. She was convinced the light fixture was coming through the ceiling! When I looked at it from her perspective it did look kind of like the balloon that was so low over the deck. She was terrified of it. I finally got on the bed and lifted her up to the light fixture to show her it was solid. I tapped on the ceiling to show her it was solid too. I pulled the chain to show her the lights went on and off, etc. I even put her paw on the bowl shape part of the light. After a few minutes of this she got quiet and seemed to be studying the light and the ceiling. After she decided the light was safe she lost interest and wanted to do something else, like play with a toy. It was the funniest thing I had seen her do. We have had lots of dogs and that was the first time one of them thought a hot air balloon was attacking us. LOL

I wanted to congratulate you on Rita’s house breaking. That is great! You really can teach an old dog new tricks!
