You’re probably all happy my garden is horrible so you won’t have to see so many garden updates, right?
The squash is still about the only thing I can say is doing well. I pulled up three red onions and the first two were rotten. At least the third one was good.
For dinner last night, we had potatoes, squash and leftover pork chops. I told Vince . . I could east squash and potatoes every night. I think I heard him say “I noticed!” There aren’t going to be enough potatoes to put up so . . we’re eating them!
I haven’t given up on the tomatoes but it is not going to be a great year for them.
Oh well . . as of last night, the lake is only down 1.4′. Considering it was down 17′ when we moved here and 11′ at the beginning of May, my garden is a small price to pay for this area having sufficient water so I’m not complaining but I am disappointed.

So sorry Judy. This weather had been awful yet good for the drought I guess. Just so darn hard for you and others ~the losses are tough to take.
Betsy says
Judy, how do you know when your onions are ready?
JudyL says
The tops will collapse onto the ground instead of standing upright.
Sherrill says
Yep, while we desperately needed the rain, sure would’ve been nice to have been a little more spread out over the summer. But for the time being, the sun is out and it can stay for awhile in my opinion! 🙂 But I’ll be ready for a little more in about a week–just enough so I don’t have to run my sprinklers! LOL I got a ‘striped cavern’ tomato and two blackberries and a ‘black prince’ is beginning to turn. YAY!
JudyL says
Great job!!

I love hearing about your garden and sad that it isn’t doing well. Maybe it will dry up and you can replant some things, like we do succession planting. Is that possible?
JudyL says
Some things I can replant but tomatoes and tomatoes both stop producing when the temps get to a certain point so it will be too warm to re-plant potatoes. If I can time it just right and get seeds sprouted, I might can get a small crop of fall tomatoes but I haven’t given up on them yet. The vines are pretty but there are no new tomatoes. Hopefully the sunny days will wake them up and they’ll start producing again.

I am also so disappointed for you. The weather is so crazy in parts of the country. It is such a bummer as you had such great crops that I envied.

I love hearing about your garden and chickens both. I’m sorry it is a flop this year but some things can still be planted can’t they? Mine is pretty well gone too. Do still have one tomato plant& one squash plant Yeppie but rest gone oh well maybe farmers market can tide us over.
How are the bluebirds doing by the way? Give us a quick update on them too sometimes please.
JudyL says
Bluebirds are doing great. We’re on the second nests in some of the boxes.
wanda jordan says
Way to go . Great news for you and the Bluebirds. Now put some houses closer to your house so you can watch up close too. They will come just need boxes. They are so fun to watch and see. beautiful birds.
JudyL says
The boxes have to be so far apart, they have to face a certain direction and they have to have a clearing in front of them so we’re pretty much at saturation point right now.
JudyL says
We’re doing this to meet guidelines for our wildlife exemption so we have to follow some of the rules they set forth.
Krista says
It must look so different around there, than it did when you held the retreat. It’s too bad your garden is suffering, but hopefully you’ll manage to squeeze in a second crop between the rain and the heat. We are still waiting for summer to arrive up here, it seems.
JudyL says
You wouldn’t believe how different it looks. We’ll take Chad and Nicole out to the lake so I’ll get some pictures.
Stephani in N. TX says
I guess gardens don’t fare too well when covered with inches of the wet stuff. My back yard collected so much water, I had mallards from the local lake come swim and “duck” for food. Hope you get a chance to replant some of your crop, we know the sun is coming and staying for the near future.
