You know I’d rather be home than most anywhere else .. but Tuesday my friend and I left for Houston. Mom was having surgery on Thursday and my friend had an appointment in Houston on Wednesday so it worked perfectly. She would get me across bridges and through the crazy Houston traffic and we’d both accomplish what needed to be accomplished there.
Mom made it through surgery fine and was released from the hospital less than 24 hours after having surgery for a brain aneurysm. Amazing! She still has a good long recovery and has to have additional surgery but they took care of the largest aneurysm.
My friend knew all the good eating places and we found ourselves wishing we would hurry up and get hungry again so we could go somewhere else to eat.
For the past five days, I have managed to:
- Eat my way across Houston! We had sushi three times at three different places in three different parts of Houston.
- Eat salmon and scallops at Dekkers.
- Have my favorite creamy crawfish bisque at Pappadeaux.
- Stay lost in Methodist Hospital. Every time I walked out of a room, I got lost.
- Have Vietnamese food at Pho Saigon.
- Visit three liquor stores to buy the things on Vince’s list.
- Shop at HEB.
- Buy little bundt cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
- Buy cupcakes from Sprinkles.
Probably the most amazing thing of all is that we drove all the way home this afternoon, while both of our husbands were home watching the weather and worrying that we were going through horrible storms, but except for one pretty hard rain storm, we never went through any bad storms. The clouds were dark behind us, and then on our left, and then on our right, and I was so hoping we didn’t get in any hail . . and we didn’t. We were so lucky!
And, on the way, my friend drove across one overpass that she was thinking might cause me some issues but coming back, I drove all the way . . through the crazy traffic on I-10, over overpasses and bridges and made it just fine. Don’t get your hopes up . . they were small bridges.
It’s good to be home! My friend was a wonderful hostess; the guest bedroom was dark, cool and quiet and the bed was so comfortable but . . there’s no place like home!

I’m glad you’re home and your mom is doing so well. Today’s medicine is amazing and has come so far. Fifty-eight years ago my mom died of a brain aneurysm that burst. It was devastating to my family. My dad was left to raise 3 little girls aged 10, 8, and 6 (he did a great job!), but in some ways it was a blessing because if she had lived she probably would have been left a vegetative state, something none of us would ever want.

Thank goodness your mom is doing well and that you made it to Houston and back with no problems. You may have just lessened your fear of bridges a bit more and before you know it, none of them will cause you any problems.

Thank you for posting about your mom. I was just telling my daughter yesterday that your mom was suppose to have surgery and we hadn’t heard a thing so far. So it is good to hear this am that all went great and she is home. Sorry she has to have more surgery later on. I’ll keep her on my mind and prayers for her recovery and all. Yes I tell my family all about you and some of my friends too. May daughter says she wants to come to Brownwood to see you and your set up. She is so impressed with all you have at you place in the country( we talked about your light bill yesterday too).Again good to hear all went well with your mom.

The great food choices are just about the only thing I miss from Houston! You’ll have to add Shipley’s donuts to your list for the next visit!
