Once upon a time, while living way out in the woods in Kentucky, Judy and Vince had an OLD F-250 truck that wouldn’t start most of the time, the brakes were bad and the air conditioner didn’t work. By Kentucky standards, it was a fine pickup, but Judy wouldn’t drive it at all. Because Judy had a garden and plants and shrubs, she insisted they should have a decent pickup. She begged and pleaded and talked Vince into buying a Chevy S-10. She didn’t know at that time that once Vince bought a vehicle, he NEVER got rid of said vehicle.
Even though the little truck has jump seat type things behind the front seats, it isn’t a family vehicle so it didn’t get much use but it was great for hauling gardening stuff and the big chocolate lab to the vet and back.
Once Chad grew up and Vince gave Chad his little sports car, Vince began driving the S-10 to work and back. Unfortunately, the little sports car didn’t have much life left in it with Chad driving it.
Thankfully, no one was hurt and that dry, parched cornfield somehow did not catch on fire . .
Judy begged Vince to give Chad the S-10 but no . . according to Vince, Chad had one chance at a vehicle and that chance was gone!
Fast forward to now . .
The S-10 is 19 years old. It got a new engine 6 or 7 years ago. It’s way too small for most jobs around here. The other two vehicles we have just don’t fit the bill. We need a nice vehicle for road trips and the Highlander is fine but the Honda is now almost 15 years old. What we need is the Highlander and a decent pickup that we could use for road trips if we wanted to haul something to MO for Chad . . or if we wanted to go out of town to a flea market and bring something back (Heaven knows we don’t need anything!).
The old S-10 no longer gets driven except maybe 5 or 6 times a year when Home Depot has mulch or charcoal on sale and Vince takes it down there and loads it up. It also goes to the landfill about every 10 days or so. It’s now mostly a “ranch truck” and we use it to run around doing jobs that are too big for the RTV.
I think we should get rid of the Honda and keep the old S-10 for dirty jobs but get a new full size pickup. Unfortunately for me, I’m the only one around here who thinks that is the thing to do.
Last weekend while planting blueberries, Vince had the bed cover open and the tail gate down . . don’t ask me why . . but he was backing up. He was watching one tree but he forgot about the front tree.
I was just thinking . . thank goodness it wasn’t me that did it!
He decided he could fix it . .
I think he was just taking his frustrations out on the tailgate.
He was pretty proud of himself . . at least he could close the tailgate now.
Next time I went out there, he had the tailgate off! What? He said he couldn’t leave it like that.
I suggested he get one of those tailgate net things but no . . he wants a regular tailgate. He came home today with a tailgate.
It doesn’t look bad considering it’s probably pretty old too but . . it is white.
White is not a problem for Vince. He bought a can of spray paint.
Looks like a pretty good match to me. My only request . . don’t spray paint anywhere near our other vehicles!

You realize that when the truck is 25 years old it can be classified as a vintage vehicle with Texas DOT? I kind of agree with you on this—he needs a big farm truck. He is a farmer/rancher guy—he has acreage in TEXAS and a “city” truck like that just isn’t gonna cut it–and yes I agree with you thank goodness he was driving—I have been there and done the same thing too thankful it was he that did the deed and not me.

What happens when it’s vintage? My insurance will probably go up! 🙂

Love that picture of Vince leaning on the passenger side of the truck with the tailgate shut. The dent makes the truck look like it is smiling as much as Vince is! Sounds like a new truck is definitely needed but I guess it is best to wait for Vince to think that up on his own. Men like to be the one with the best idea! ! !

Yes, some day, maybe he’ll decide it’s time. So long as I have a decent vehicle to get back and forth to MO, I’m not going to rock the boat.

We usually limp along with whatever old piece of junk I’m driving until I totally get fed up with the unreliability and just go buy myself something newer to drive. Hubby hasn’t gone car shopping with me for my last two cars. Keep your fingers crossed, so far I’ve made good, long-lasting choices. Honestly, when pieces start falling off as you drive down the road, it’s time!!

This made me laugh. Paul had everything unhooked from the truck one time, but forgot and shut the tailgate before he pulled out from under the gooseneck. Oops – looked a little like Vince’s final job there afterwards. It was a long day and he was tired. Same color truck, too. Men and their trucks. =)

The S-10 is looking more & more like an old ranch truck! With body work so pricey we see lots of multi-colored vehicles around here.

Bet he wouldn’t have had that big ole grin on his face if you’d made the dent!! 🙂

You are so right!

Goodness sakes, Vince. Buy a new truck!
