I almost feel bad, because I know the grocery stores are in it to make money, but I almost never buy anything that isn’t on sale. I watch the ads and when things are on sale, I stock up. If there’s something I really want or need for a recipe I’m determined to make, I’ll get it even if it isn’t on sale. Things like cornstarch and baking powder (both of which are on my list this week) are rarely on sale so I just buy them when I need them.
Vince and I were at Kroger over the weekend and I don’t understand their “bargain shelf” pricing. It’s always things they still have on the shelf for regular price so it isn’t like a closeout or anything.
I actually love the casserole with the green beans, cream of mushroom soup and these onions, along with a few other things. They had three cans of these, regular $3.99, marked down to $2.09. The expiration date is November, 2015. Why were just these three packages marked down?
You know how I love Noosa yogurt. I don’t buy it now that we make our own but tart cherry is one of my favorite flavors and for the yogurt I make at home, I use fresh fruit – blueberries, strawberries, peaches . . whatever is on sale. This yogurt was regular $4.99, marked down to $2.49. The “use by” date is April 17. They had a package there with a use by date of April 14 and it was not marked down. Figure that one out.
I use a lot of rice vinegar. This was regular $2.19, on sale for $1.09. They had four bottles and I got all four of them. Makes no sense but I’m happy when I come across deals like this!

It does seem very curious on their part, doesn’t it. Why not ask next time you’re in the shop and buying one of these super specials. You never know – you might find a staff member who actually knows!

I have enough trouble asking the folks in that store if they have more onions or bananas . . I try not to ask anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. 🙂

That is very strange indeed! Tart Cherry is my favorite, and that’s the price I paid for ONE today. Food City is a little less but it only carries one flavor. I guess I’m lucky it isn’t one that’s nasty. LOL I’ve eaten that a month past its sell-by date and it was a little thicker and creamier, but perfectly tasty and perfectly okay. Don’t worry about only buying on sale. Very few people actually do that! They are making a lot of money off people who run in to buy milk and walk out with $60 worth of groceries.

A store manager once told me when a box or case was damaged, all contents was discounted not just the one or few that were actually damaged. Something about inventory control management.

Maybe that explains it!

I am a confirmed Aldi shopper, but when I have to go to the “regular” supermarket I choose on-sale products. When a smaller neighborhood market closed this spring (its antiquated coolers broke down and the owner couldn’t afford to upgrade, plus he was ready to retire) quite a number of people said they shopped there regularly. They were willing to pay more for products to have the convenience. (E.g. $3.29 for a box of cereal whose clone is $1.99 at Aldi.)

I do the same thing. buy the bargains…. My income is not going up and there is no way to do that…. If something’s reduced, and it is something I would use we buy it. What I do buy that isn’t on sale, is probably what keeps it open….
