Thanks to my blog readers who know how much we love Blue Bell, I now know there’s been a listeria outbreak due to Blue Bell ice cream products. Since I’ve talked about them so much, I wanted to post this little “public service announcement” and be sure everyone knows what’s going on. Honestly, I’m always the last person to know everything so I doubt this will be news to anyone.
You can read about it here or lots of other places on the internet. So far, it doesn’t appear to involve the cartons of ice cream but more their novelty type products and bars. We only buy ice cream in cartons but I can tell you . . I’m just a little apprehensive about eating their ice cream right now.
The weird thing is . . just before I got the first email about the listeria, Chad called and said “Mom, you HAVE to try Edy’s Vanilla Frozen Custard!” He said it reminds him of that first bite of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla . . how he remembers it tasting when he was a kid. It was funny . . my boy saying something about when he was a kid. I know .. he’s a man now. He’ll be 28 this year but he’ll always be my boy!
I will finish the Blue Bell we have here. We’ve eaten half of each carton that’s here so I’m hoping that means it’s safe but I think the next thing I buy will be Edy’s Vanilla Frozen Custard.

Judy, I saw that there was a Blue Bell recall and, honest to God, the first person I thought of was you!!!! I see that ice cream here in Florida (at Walgreens) and I always think of you.
Honestly, I just saw an article about a recall today so I don’t think you are that far out of the loop!!! I am a news junkie!!! Just be safe, please. Listeria is not cool.

I also thought of you when I saw the recall! Since it’s not available here, I didn’t pay too much attention to exactly what all it involved.

i’m glad you posted because i had NOT seen the recall notice!
I was going to go out and buy some Blue Bell today, so now i’ll look twice at the cartons before i pick one up. hopefully the stores have already pulled the bad cartons.
thanks again for letting your readers know about the recall.

Thank goodness it was only a small batch in the novelties! We’re such big fans we buy only the half gallons and only when it’s on sale!

Interesting that he likes Edy’s. I think it’s the worst ice cream ever and won’t buy it. LOL I never heard of this particular disease before, but I suppose we’ll hear a lot about it now.

I’m hoping Bluebell puts their half-gallons on sale because of this scare. I’m going to stock up! Don’t want to run out of this necessity…
If you can’t trust Bluebell, you can’t trust any of our food supply. Just a thought…

I am there! That’s why we raise as much as we can, buy from local farmers or hunt for most of our meat. I do not trust our food supply, nor do I trust, in general, those who are supposedly making sure our food is safe.

I discovered Blue Bell 40 years ago this spring when I moved to Brenham for my first “real” library job. One of my favorite t-shirts has an old-fashioned ice cream freezer and the slogan, “I get cranky without my Blue Bell.” I saw one other person wearing that shirt at the Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield, Maine, about 1992.

Judy, I too thought of you first when I heard about the recall. On the positive side though, our TV news said that this is the first recall Blue Bell has ever had in over 100 years of operation. They also said, it did not affect any of the consumer cartons that they sell in stores, but was more the institutional packaging stuff.

I love Eddy’s Frozen Custard! I’ve never had Blue Bell – at least I don’t remember every buying it. But EFC is so creamy and smooth, I’m craving some just reading about it!
