When I was in MO, I had hoped to get my mittens finished so I could felt them in Nicole’s top load washer. She got hers finished before I got mine finished and she felted hers. The photo below shows hers already felted on either side of my unfelted mitten.
I did finish my second mitten before leaving there but didn’t take the time to felt it there.
Before felting, the mitten was about 14″ long.
After felting, it’s about 9-1/2″ long and fits great.
I did have to run it through the washer twice, and I used the following settings:
Water Temp: Hot
Spin Speed: Max
Soil Level: Heavy
I had read that letting them spin too long can result in creases and there are creases. I took them out of the washer, flattened them out a bit and left them. I should have flattened them out a bit more and I probably will reduce the spin level down to high or maybe medium next time. I’m sure that after a bit of wearing, the creases will be less visible, but it is nice to know that I can felt in the front load.
I want to make the Hobbit Slippers that Denise made.

And didn’t I have to have a pair of those slippers and wasn’t the yarn on sale when I went to Ravelery to look it up and didn’t I order 7 skeins…… So I want a pair for me and a friend or two…. What can I say…….
Thanks for sharing.

That’s how it happens to me too. Denise reports they’re very warm.
Denise says
Judy – I had a felted tote bag that had the creases in it and I just steamed it with my iron and it took them out. Had some in my hobbit shoes too but they disappeared after I wore them a day.

I thought about steaming and was ironing today and should have tried it. Thanks — will do it next time I have the iron in.
