Remember at Thanksgiving when Vince had taken the meat off the turkey bones and thankfully, I had put the bones on to simmer but we went outside to feed the chickens, had no idea Rita could or would get on the table and she had her fill of deboned turkey.
We’ve been careful about pushing the chairs under the table so Rita can’t get up on the table. It’s funny to watch her sometimes because she will hop up on the seat part of the chair and run around from chair to chair trying to find a way to sneak onto the table.
Yesterday we had cleaned everything off the table except . . one stick of butter that was about half gone. I had been sitting at my computer, which is on the table until my recliner gets fixed, and I got up and went outside . . leaving my chair not pushed in.
While outside, I remembered I hadn’t pushed my chair in but when I came in, Rita was not on the table so I was relieved. A little while later, I heard Speck licking something in the family room, went in there to find the empty butter wrapper. I guess Rita was licking it and pushed it off the table and who knows what happened next but . . both dogs are still alive and don’t seem to be in any distress this morning.
Both on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, Rita has had things she shouldn’t have. She must think she deserves a special meal on holidays too.
I am going to have to be way more careful about pushing my chair in and making sure EVERYTHING is off the table.

We humans might not consider half a stick of butter to be much of a treat, but to the dogs it was a fine Christmas tidbit. We all like a treat once in a while. As my daughter says about the youngest grandchildren (her niece & nephew)when she gives them candy, “they need a little of the bad stuff once in a while to stay normal”. 🙂 Rita & Speck are normal.

We have a dog that likes people food and is good at finding stuff she shouldn’t have. She ate a whole plate of chocolate fudge on Christmas Eve. So we poured about a tablespoon of salt down her throat and it worked REALLY quick all that fudge was on the floor in about 2 seconds flat! Saved the dog and a vet bill!

Back in the seventies my cousin was a high school majorette and her group was selling great big candy bars. My aunt’s doxy ate a whole box of them one night. It didn’t seem to hurt her. Another time they left a pan of bacon grease on the stove and the dog licked it clean. Once again, it didn’t seem to hurt her! Debbie in WV

Oh, yes. Another one of the bassets tricks is to get on the table from the chairs. For short dogs, they sure like to be up high on stuff.
Two days ago, I lost my hamburger when I got up to turn off a beeper. Not 2 seconds, and they were all sleeping. I thought I could just hit it and be back.
I know that feeling of panic, when I realize I forgot the push the chair in!
Now McGee has nearly figured out how to move the chair out. I can see his brain working on that!

Just pushing the chair in no longer works at my house. I have to totally move them away from the table or pile stuff in the unused ones. My darling shi-tzu has figured out how to squeeze his fat little body up between the chair back and the table, twist around and get on the table. He really thinks he has a treat when he gets the napkins or peppermints off the table. I have had to train myself not to leave anything on the table.

I feel for you!! My great dane, Deacon stole a whole pound of butter off of the counter just the other day!! It made him sick and he threw up several times and made the whole house smelled like buttered popcorn.
