This post is mainly for my benefit. Next year about this time, I plan to come back to these photos and compare with screen shots of the lists to verify my progress in using the stash. This is not to brag about how much yarn I have so please . . no wrong ideas here. That’s why I’m posting it on the Saturday before Christmas, hoping everyone is busy with something else and no one even reads through this! 🙂
These tubs are loaded with fun projects and I’m so ready to get started. Think how much more knitting time I’ll have since I won’t be hanging out shopping at the yarn sites!
Another thing that came to mind as I was doing all this. Think about how much $$ we have invested in yarn, fabric, sewing machines, etc. You know if there was a fire or tornado or any kind of loss, no insurance adjuster would believe us so these lists, now that they’re on the internet, will serve as a record if I ever need it. Let’s just hope Vince doesn’t find it! 🙂
Bucket #1: Everything in this bucket has an assigned project. If, during 2015, I find a sweater I’m really wanting to make and have the yarn but it’s assigned to another pattern, I’ll evaluate whether I’d like to make the new sweater or the already assigned sweater and make a decision about which project gets that yarn.
Bucket #2: Same thing . . a project for all the yarn.
Bucket #3: Same thing! Projects assigned.
Bucket #4: Same thing! All yarn has a project assigned.
Bucket #5: Project for all the yarn.
Bucket #6: Projects assigned.
Bucket #7: A bucket with no project in mind .. or at least not one I could remember when I was making the list. I think I did figure out what the Berroco Ultra Alpaca and Mrs. Crosby Hat Box was for but I didn’t go back and update the list. I probably won’t get to those this year anyway.
Bucket #8: A bucket with loose yarn .. no project assigned. There’s a lot of yarn already in buckets in the sewing room with no assigned project but mostly it’s just 1 skein of each.
Bucket #9: Some with projects assigned and some not.
Bucket #10: Mostly these do have projects. The Harrisville WATERshed was what I bought for Hay Cove and then decided to use Cascade 220. I may make another one of those. Love that sweater! Obviously, I have enough of the yarn to make several more!
Buckets #11 and 12: Some with projects assigned and some not. I’m sure I had something in mind when I bought these, especially the ones with several skeins. Not important now .. I won’t get to those in 2015.
Bucket 13: More with projects assigned.
Buckets #14, 15,16 and 17:
The fingering weight bucket is full of single skeins mostly. This was yarn that was just too pretty to pass up. Lots of socks in there but there are other things I can make with a single skein. I try to keep a pair of socks going so I can have something to take with me if I need a project that doesn’t require a lot of thinking and counting.
The Knit Picks has just yarn from Knit Picks. Most of that was probably purchased with a project in mind but at this point, I don’t have a clue. Quite a bit of it was for hats and mittens.
Cascade 220, but it’s almost all 220 Superwash. Oh, how I love having lots of colors of that around. It’s so good for hats and mittens. I had the yarn I needed to make the chicken mittens. If I’m tempted to buy any yarn this year, it will probably be 220 Superwash just to have more colors.
Finally, in bucket #17 . . leftovers. Especially yarns that I use a lot of, like Malabrigo Rios, or Madelinetosh DK . . an extra skein here and a half a skein there, that remain after a project is completed . . those add up and can be used when I want to make something striped or just need a bit of color in a similar weight project.
I hope we see lots and lots of highlighted rows (meaning the yarn has been used) by this time next year and I surely hope there is not a tub numbered 18 or 19. 🙂

Judy … I have a great idea … send me a bucket, one with the project instructions. I’ll knit them and send it back to you. Send other buckets to other faithful followers of yours and Ta Da, pretty soon you won’t have all those buckets to stare at!
Happy Holidays!

Great idea!

Jduy, Judy, Judy! Did you really think that just because today is the busiest Saturday of the year we would not squeeze every last post you write into our day? My day doesn’t begin properly until I’ve read The Patchwork Times! The only thing that gets me through the day when I am away from my computer for any extended period of time is the promise that, when I return, I will be able to snuggle up with my computer and a cup of tea and binge read! Your organization both shames and inspires me. When I grow up, I’m going to be just like you! (I’d better hurry up though; AARP keeps reminding me I’m long overdue for membership!) Keep those posts of every kind coming, and I’ll watch avidly next year, as you knit your way through 17 bins of lovely yarn! Thank you for everything you’ve done (and that is considerable!) to make my 2014 a blast! Merry Christmas!

I agree totally myself. Got to read each post before going daily stuff myself. By the way I’ve got a room filed to the hilt just like yours with all kinds of projects myself( painting. scrapbooking, rubber stamping, quilting, sewing in general and last but not least is jewelry making). People tell me they get bored. Well heck fire I’ve not got time to get board to much to do and not enough time is my saying. Now to just get this organized would be great.

At least when it comes to yarn I am not as bad as you! But I may catch up as you and Denise keep posting patterns that I like, not to mention the yarns that I have to go look at and sometimes order! And we do have this nice little yarn shop in
Round Rock. She carries some great yarns as well. Guess I had better clear out a few more fabric bins so I can fill them with yarn.

Wow! You weren’t kidding, were you!!? Are you going to have quilting time next year? Sure hope so, because I don’t do much knitting, but I have as much fabric as you have yarn, I’m afraid! Thanks for all your inspiration through the year! Have a Merry Christmas!!

All I can say….OMG!! At least the yarn stash can fit in tubs! I’d have no room for the tubs it’d take to contain the fabric stash. UGH!

There is a really great yarn shop in Paige Texas. Yarn-O-Rama. And they are on line too.
Not that far from Round Rock.

Well, I read to the end and it made me feel so good! My stash is paltry compared to yours which means I didn’t spend as much as I thought. On the other hand, I’ll probably be buying more yarn in 2015 although I promised myself I would only buy for specific projects.

Are you planning on getting any sleep in 2015?!?! Lots of great projects listed. Good luck on stashing down. Nice reminder about documentation for insurance….that’s why I decided to keep update my Ravelry stash a couple years ago.

I find that actually pulling out the yarn and looking at it is a reality check for me. When I look at my stash in Ravelry it just doesn’t click as to how much I really have… Looking at my over-stuffed yarn room however… 🙂

Silly me, I thought we were going to see photos!

Miss Judy, you need a 12 step program!! Love all your post about yarn and fabric and can’t wait to see what you accomplish in the new year. Thanks for all the laughs, tears, information and recipes. Merry Christmas to your family from our family.
Norma says
Wow, Judy! I feel better about my stash after seeing your list :-). You have encouraged me to take inventory of what I have here in Florida and use some of it up. Most was bought just because and not for a special project. Do you use Ravely at all to track your yarn? Will try for mostly no buy this year……hopefully. Merry Christmas!
TerriS says
By my count, you have somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 skeins of yarn. Based on what you used this year, it will take you 10 years to knit all that yarn up IF you don’t buy any more (and I don’t really think you can go a whole year without buying any, LOL).
I have to admit though, I don’t really get the concept of stash. When I want to make something, I buy the fabric or yarn I need and I make it. I never really understood investing thousands of dollars in stuff I may never use just for the convenience of having it around. It obviously makes you happy though, and that’s worth something!!
AmyM says
Made me feel better! LOL
Nann says
No photos? You are courageous to classify and declare all your yarn. I would not even attempt to do that with my fabric. We will be watching for your reports!

Great organization plan! Where do you keep all the containers? I never thought about listing everything for insurance purposes….I have several kinds of stashes, too. Good idea. I hope to live on my stash-es in 2015!!!
