Rita is not a snuggler and you can forget about holding her and petting her. There is not part about being held and snuggled that she likes! She’s now out of the kitchen and the cone is off and yesterday, she stayed in her little “nest” on the sofa but today, she’s moved over to the foot of my recliner.
Speck has always sat with me. If I’m in the chair, he’s in the chair with me.
He isn’t real sure what to think about it, or how to get rid of her but he’s being very accommodating, which is surprising. He’s now crawled back under the quilt and they’re both sleeping peacefully. I would never have guessed that Speck would have allowed this!
The only problem is . . Rita snores and for a little dog, she is loud! She and Vince should have a contest!
This gives me hope that some day she will sit on my lap and let me pet her.

She’s just not real sure of her new family yet. She may have been abused or at least yelled at. Look how far she has come in just a few months.

This is so sweet! How does she do if you just reach down and touch her for a second? Baby steps.

I like seeing the pic of Speck, I can just imagine the conversation going on in his/her head (not sure which it is) – what the heck do you think your doing laying there, this is my spot…..
Sherrill says
WOW! What happened to Vince’s chair? No one interested in laying near him anymore? Poor Vince….

We have a pug that we rescued at one year. She’s now ten. She doesn’t like to be held. There must have been something missing in her first year. She loves to sleep with us and wriggles against my back when she wakes up in the morning. Best massage ever! When we sit on the deck, she stands by my legs for her petting. But if I pick her up in my lap, she won’t sit and is anxious. Dogs — just like people — have their quirks.

I love the Rita-Speck updates. I read that little dogs like chihuahuas need sweaters in the colder weather. Rita might like one but I wonder if Speck would like one? You might get less cuddling from Rita if she is warmer, though.

It took about 3 years for our former stay beagle (probably an abandoned hunting dog) to like people. He did a lot of snuggling with our other dog, but was a wary of humans. Rita is coming along a lot faster than our dog did.
Mary in VA says
Rita may understand that your lap is Speck’s. My cats are like that – They won’t come up if the cat that claimed me as it’s human is nearby. If she’s out, then I get about 3 minutes of lap time.

Oh, Judy, seeing your photos of Speck brought tears to my eyes this morning. My sweet dachshund, Schnitzel, passed away two weeks ago today at age 14. For the first time in 14 years, my lap is empty, and I miss that snuggly little boy terribly. Enjoy these moments!
