We love figs and when I say LOVE . . I mean . . I think we both sneak out to the fig trees and pick them and eat them when the other isn’t looking. As you might guess, since one of us works away from home and one of us stays home, there might be one of us getting a whole lot more sneaking time than the other one of us! 🙂
This year, for the first time, we’re finally getting enough figs that we both can eat all we want and we’re having a few left over. Yesterday after we both had our fill of figs, these were left over so I stuck them in the fridge.
We’re getting about 2 quarts per day now and should continue to get that many til the first freeze.
I halved some of the leftover figs and put them in a salad to have with our dinner tonight.
The salad had toasted pecans, cauliflower, mozzarella cheese, figs and mixed greens. That was a great use of the extra figs. I think I’ll do it again!

Those are beautiful figs! The squirrels (aka tree rats) eat everything fruity I try to grow, so I get them from someone who apparently has no wildlife eating everything in sight just as it ripens.
You may count me among the Fig Freaks. I love them so very much. Enjoy!

I love dried figs but I have never had a fresh fig. Do they taste different?

I’ve never had a fresh fig but Fig Newton cookies are my very favorite!

Ok….figs are my favorite fruit…..when I was little I would go to my Great Aunt and Uncle’s ranch….and right by the front porch……there was a fig tree that had to be 20 feet tall….well all the cousins would climb up in the tree and eat tons of figs……my Zia who did not speak English……would come out and yell at us in Italian that we were going to get sick eating all the figs…..and we would, but we would all get in that tree the next day and eat a ton more figs…..

What type of figs are those? They look great!

Fresh figs are da’ bomb! They have a mild flavor & are less intense than dried figs. Since they are not dried, they are more juicy, but not like you need to wipe-your-chin-juicy. The ones I buy in the store are very delicate and need to be refrigerated. I also find they need to be eaten within 2 days or so of bringing them home. Trader Joe’s has them for a good price. Sprouts does too, but not as cheap.
Judy, how do you preserve your figs? Is there any way to keep them without making them into jam?
Karin Vail says
I have never had a fig. I guess they probably don’t grow here in the Pacific NW and they must not travel well to be in the grocery stores 🙁

Do you peel them or do you eat them just as you see in the pic? I have never had a fresh fig either.

Like everyone else I’m curious what kind of figs you are growing and having such luck with. Do tell!

I can just picture you and Vince making excuses to go outside, and bee-lining for the fig trees. It’s nice that you both enjoy them so much.
I had my first fresh fig after moving to California, and I think they’re wonderful, too! The person who had the figs said he got sticky lips all day but it was worth it. I wondered how all day? but found out (they were a green fig) and yes, it is worth it!
For readers’ info: figs don’t ripen after picking (like so many fruits do) so buy them ripe and eat them soon.
